Ch.9-1　「水にすっかり囲まれた小さな動物だと少し心配だな。」

IT RAINED and it rained and it rained.
雨が降って、降って、降り続きました。

Piglet told himself that never in all his life,
ピグレットは生まれて初めてだと思いました。

and he was goodness knows how old ー three, was it, or four? ー never had he seen so much rain.
彼が何歳だったか、３歳か４歳か、誰も知らない、こんな雨は見たことがありませんでした。

Days and days and days.
来る日も、来る日も、来る日も。

"If only," he thought, as he looked out of the window, "I had been in Pooh's house, or Christofer Robin's house, or Rabbit's house when it began to rain, then I should have had Company all this time, instead of being here all alone, with nothing to do except wonder when it will stop."
「もし、雨が降り始めたとき、プーの家か、クリストファー・ロビンの家か、ラビットの家にいたら、いつ止むのだろうと考える以外、何もすることもなくここに一人でいる代わりにずっと話し相手がいてくれたはずなのに。」と、窓の外を見ながら思いました。

And he imagined himself with Pooh, saying, "Did you ever see such rain, Pooh?" and Pooh saying, "Isn't it awful, Piglet?" and Piglet saying, "I wonder how it is over Christofer Robin's way" and Pooh saying, "I should think poor old Rabbit is about flooded out by this time."
そしてプーと一緒にいる自分を想像して言いました。「こんな雨見たことある、プー？」 するとプーは、「怖くないかい、ピグレット？」 するとピグレットは、「クリストファー・ロビンだったらどうしてるだろう。」 するとプーは、「かわいそうなラビットはもう溺れかかってるんじゃないかな。」

It would have been jolly to talk like this,
こんなふうに話したら楽しかったでしょうに。

and really, it wasn't much good having anything exciting like floods, if you couldn't share them with somebody.
実際は誰かと一緒でなければ洪水のようなものはちっとも楽しくありませんでした。

For it was rather exciting.
かなりハラハラする出来事でした。

The little dry ditches in which Piglet had nosed about so often had become streams, the little streams across which he had splashed were rivers, and the river, between whose steep banks they had played so happily, had sprawled out of its own bed and was taking up so much room everywhere, that Piglet was beginning to wonder whether it would be coming into his bed soon.
ピグレットがよく鼻をこすりつけていた小さな乾いた溝は小川のようになっていましたし、彼が水しぶきを上げていた小川は川のようになっていましたし、土手で楽しく遊んでいた川は川床から溢れ出していて、ピグレットのベッドのところまでせまろうかと思い始めているようでした。

"It's a little Anxious," he said to himself, "to be a Very Small Animal Entirely Surrounded by Water. Christofer Robin and Pooh could escape by Climbing Trees, and Kanga could escape by Jumping, and Rabbit could escape by Burrowing, and Owl could escape by Flying, and Eeyore could escape by ー by Making a Loud Noise Until Rescued, and here I am, surrounded by water and I can't do anything."
「水にすっかり囲まれた小さな動物だと少し心配だな。」彼は思いました。「クリストファー・ロビンやプーは木に登って逃げることができるし、カンガはジャンプして逃げれる。ラビットは穴を掘って逃げれる。アウルは飛んで逃げれる。イーヨーは、ー助け出されるまで大声を出して逃げれる。ボクはここで水に囲まれて何も出来ない。」

It went on raining, and every day the water got a little higher,
雨は降り続き、そして毎日水かさは少しづつ増していきました。

until now it was nearly up to Piglet's window . . .
ついにピグレットの窓の近くまで上がってきました・・・

and still he hadn't done anything.
それでも彼には何もできませんでした。

"There's Pooh," he thought to himself. "Pooh hasn't much Brain, but he never comes to any harm. He does silly things and they turn out right.
彼は考えました。「プーがいる。プーはそれほど頭がよくない。でもひどい目に合うことはない。バカなことをするけど、結果はうまく行っている。

There's Owl. Owl hasn't exactly got Brain, but he Knows Things. He would know the Right Thing to Do when Surrounded by Water.
アウルがいる。アウルは正確には頭がよくない。でも彼は何でも知っている。彼は水に囲まれたとき、やるべき正しいことを知っている。

There's Rabbit. He hasn't Learnt in Books, but he can always Think of a Clever Plan.
ラビットがいる。彼は本では学んでいない。でもいつも賢い計画を思いつく。

There's Kanga. She isn't Clever, Kanga isn't, but she would be so anxious about Roo that she would do a Good Thing to Do without thinking about it.
カンガがいる。彼女は確かに賢くない。でもルーのことを心配して、何も考えずにやるべき正しいことをする。

And then there's Eeyore. And Eeyore is so miserable anyhow that he wouldn't mind about this. But I wonder what Christofer Robin would do?"
そして、イーヨーがいる。イーヨーはとにかく惨めでこんなことは気にしない。でも、クリストファー・ロビンはどうするのかなあ？」
