"Well," said Owl, "the customary procedure in such cases is as follows."

"What does Crustimoney Proseedcake mean?" said Pooh. "For I am a Bear of Very Little Brain, and long words Bother me."
「そのクラスティマニー・プロシードケイクって何？ボクは頭が悪いクマだから長い単語は苦手なんだ。」とプーは言いました。

"As long as it means that, I don't mind," said Pooh humbly.

"The thing to do is as follows. First, Issue a Reward. Then ー"
「やるべきことは次のとおり。まず報酬を出して、それからー」
"Just a moment," said Pooh, holding up his paw. "What do we do to this ー what you were saying? You sneezed just as you were going to tell me."
「ちょっと待って、君の言ってることにどうしたらいいって？ボクに言おうとした時に君はクシャミしたけど。」と、プーは手を上げて言いました。
"I didn't sneeze."
「クシャミはしてない。」
"Yes, you did, Owl."
「確かにしたよ、アウル。」
"Excuse me, Pooh, I didn't. You can't sneeze without knowing it."
「失礼だが、プー、やってない。クシャミすれば自分でもわかるよ。」

"Well, you can't know it without something having been sneezed."
「クシャミしたんだからわかるはずだよ。」

"You're doing it again," said Pooh sadly.
「ほら、またクシャミしてる。」プーは悲しそうに言いました。
"A Reward!" said Owl very loudly. "We write a notice to say that we will give a large something to anybody who finds Eeyore's tail."
「報酬！」アウルは大声で言いました。「イーヨーの尻尾を見つけた人に何かいいものをやる、と張り紙に書くんだ。」
"I see, I see," said Pooh, nodding his head.
「わかった。わかった。」プーはうなづいて言いました。

"Talking about large something," he went on dreamily, "I generally have a small something about now ー about this time in the morning,"

and he looked wistfully at the cupboard in the corner of Owl's parlour,
そしてアウルのパーラーの隅にある食器棚を物欲しそうに見ました。
"just a mouthful of condensed milk or what not, with perhaps a lick of honey ー"
「コンデンスミルクをひと口とか、その他、たぶんハチミツをひと口でもあれば ー」

"Well, then," said Owl, "we write out this notice, and we put it up all over the forest."
「よし、それじゃあ。この掲示板を書いて、森に立てよう。」アウルは言いました。
"A lick of honey," murmured Bear to himself, "or ー or not, as the case may be."
「ハチミツをひと舐め、あるいは、事情次第では、他のー」と、プーはつぶやきました。

And he gave a deep sigh, and tried very hard to listen to what Owl was saying.
彼は深いため息をついて一生懸命アウルが言っていることを聞こうとしました。
But Owl went on and on, using longer and longer words, until at last he came back to where he started,
しかしアウルは長い長い単語を使って、話を進め、とうとう話は振り出しに戻りました。
and he explained that the person to write out this notice was Christofer Robin.
そしてこの掲示板を書くのはクリストファー・ロビンだと説明しました。
"It was he who wrote the ones on my front door for me. Did you see them, Pooh?"
「玄関の掲示板を書いたのも彼だ。見ただろ、プー？」
For some time Pooh had been saying "Yes" and "No" in turn, with his eyes shut, to all that Owl was saying, and having said, "Yes, yes," last time, he said "No, not at all," now, without really knowing what Owl was talking about.
この間、プーはアウルの言っていることに、目を閉じて、「はい。」と「いいえ。」を交互に言っていましたが、最後に「そうそう。」と言って、「いや、まったく違う。」と、アウルが何を話しているのかまったく分からずに言いました。
