Ch.8-2　「風で家が倒れていると思ったんだ。」

"Why, what's going to happen on Thursday?" asked Rabbit, and when Pooh had explained,
「どうしたの？木曜日に何かあるの？」ラビットは尋ねました。そしてプーが説明した時、

and Rabbit, whose lifewas made up of Important Things, said, "Oh, I thought you'd really come about something,"
そしてラビットは、彼の人生は重要な事でできていたのですが、「何か重要なことがあって来たのかと思った。」と言いました。

they sat down for a little... and by-and-by Pooh and Piglet went on again.
彼らはしばらく座り込んで、やがてプーとピグレットは再び出かけました。

The wind was behind them now, so they didn't have to shout.
風はもう通り過ぎて、彼らは叫ぶ必要はありませんでした。

"Rabbit's clever," said Pooh thoughtfully.
「ラビットは賢い。」プーは考えて言いました。

"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit's clever."
「そう、ラビットは賢い。」ピグレットは言いました。

"And he has Brain."
「そして、彼は脳を持っている。」

"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit has Brain."
「そう、ラビットは脳を持っている。」ピグレットは言いました。 長い沈黙がありました。

"I suppose," said Pooh, "that that's why he never understands anything."
「だから、彼は何も理解しないんだと思う。」プーは言いました。

Christopher Robin was at home by this time,
クリストファー・ロビンはこの頃までには家に帰っていました。

because it was the afternoon, and he was so glad to see them that they stayed there until very nearly tea-time,
なぜなら、もう午後の時間帯で、彼は二人に会えて嬉しかったので、お茶の時間近くまで居ました。

and then they had a Very Nearly tea, which is one you forget about afterwards, and hurried on to Pooh Corner,
それから彼らは『もうそろそろお茶』のおやつ（食べたことを忘れるようなものでしたが）を食べて、プー横丁に急ぎました。

so as to see Eeyore before it was too late to have a Proper Tea with Owl.
アウルとの『正式なお茶』に遅れないように、イーヨーに会いに行くためです。

"Hallo, Eeyore," they called out cheerfully.
「やあ、イーヨー、」彼らは明るく呼びかけました。

"Ah!" said Eeyore. "Lost your way?"
「ああ！道に迷ったの？」イーヨーは言いました。

"We just came to see you," said Piglet. "And to see how your house was. Look, Pooh, it's still standing!"
「キミに会いに来たんだよ。」ピグレットは言いました。「それと、キミの家がどうなってるか確かめに。ほら！プー、まだ建ってるよ！」

"I know," said Eeyore. "Very odd. Somebody ought to have come down and pushed it over."
「分かってる。」イーヨーは言いました。「おかしな話だ。誰かが来て家を押し倒しておいたほうがよかったのか。」

"We wondered whether the wind would blow it down," said Pooh.
「風で家が倒れると思ったんだ。」プーは言いました。

"Ah, that's why nobody's bothered, I suppose. I thought perhaps they'd forgotten."
「だから誰も悩んでいないんだ。みんなは忘れてるんだと思ってた。」

"Well, we're very glad to see you, Eeyore, and now we're going on to see Owl."
「でも、キミに会えて嬉しいよ、イーヨー。これからアウルに会いに行くんだ。」

"That's right. You'll like Owl. He flew past a day or two ago and noticed me. He didn't actually say anything, mind you, but he knew it was me. Very friendly of him, I thought. Encouraging."
「そうかい。君たちはアウルが好きだからね。彼なら２日ほど前に近くを通って、ボクに気付いたよ。彼は何も言わなかったけど、いいかい、ボクだと分かってた。彼はとても友達思いだよ。元気がでるよ。」

Pooh and Piglet shuffled about a little and said, "Well, good-bye, Eeyore" as lingeringly as they could, but they had a long way to go, and wanted to be getting on. 「プーとピグレットは少し落ち着かなくてもぞもぞと、言いました。「じゃあ、さよなら、イーヨー」とできるだけ名残惜しそうに言った。彼らはまだ行かなければならないところがあり早くおいとましたかったのです。

"Good-bye," said Eeyore. "Mind you don't get blown away, little Piglet. You'd be missed. People would say 'Where's little Piglet been blown to?'--really wanting to know. Well, good-bye. And thank you for happening to pass me."
「さよなら、」イーヨーは言った。「いいかい、風に吹き飛ばされるなよ、ピグレット。キミは見つからなくなるよ。みんなが『ピグレットはどこにふきとばされたんだろう？』って言うよ。本当に知りたいよ。じゃあ、さよなら。たまたま訪ねてくれてありがとう。」

"Good-bye," said Pooh and Piglet for the last time, and they pushed on toOwl's house.
「さよなら。」最後にプーとピグレットは言って、アウルの家に急ぎました。

The wind was against them now,
向かい風になっていました。

and Piglet's ears streamed behind him like banners as he fought his way along, and it seemed hours before he got them into the shelter of the Hundred Acre Wood
何とか前に進みながら、ピグレットの耳は垂れ幕のように後ろに流れ、１００エーカーの森の避難所入るまでに何時間もかかったように思われました。

and they stood up straight again, to listen, a little nervously, to the roaring of the gale among the tree-tops.
避難所では彼らは再びまっすぐに立って、少し心配そうに木のてっぺんが強風でごーごーと鳴る音が聞こえました。

"Supposing a tree fell down, Pooh, when we were underneath it?"
「木が倒れたらどうしよう、プー、ボクらが下を通っているときに。」

"Supposing it didn't," said Pooh after careful thought.
「そうならなかったとしたら。」プーは注意深く考えて、言いました。
