Ch.6-5　「キミが飛び跳ねて、イーヨーを川に落としたんだ。」

"But who did it?" asked Roo.
「でも誰がしたの？」ルーは尋ねました。

Eeyore didn't answer.
イーヨーは答えませんでした。

"I expect it was Tigger," said Piglet nervously.
「ティガーだと思う。」ピグレットは心配そうに言いました。

"But, Eeyore," said Pooh, "was it a Joke, or an Accident? I mean--"
「でも、イーヨー。」プーは言いました。「冗談か事故だったんだよね。つまりー」

"I didn't stop to ask, Pooh. Even at the very bottom of the river I didn't stop to say to myself, 'Is this a Hearty Joke, or is it the Merest Accident?' I just floated to the surface, and said to myself, 'It's wet.' If you know what I mean."
「落ち着いて聞いてみようとはしなかったよ、プー。川の底にいたときでさえ、じっくり考えることもなかった。『これは愛のある冗談なの？それともめったにない事故なの？』って。ボクはただ、浮かび上がって、こう思ったんだ。『ずぶ濡れだ。』ってね。ボクの言ってる意味分かる？」

"And where was Tigger?" asked Rabbit.
「そして、ティガーはどこ？」ラビットは尋ねました。

Before Eeyore could answer, there was a loud noise behind them,
イーヨーが答えようとする前に、後ろから大きな音がしました。

nd through the hedge came Tigger himself.
そして垣根からティガーが出てきました。

"Hallo, everybody," said Tigger cheerfully.
「やあ、みんな。」ティガーは元気に言いました。

"Hallo, Tigger," said Roo.
「やあ、ティガー。」ルーは言いました。

Rabbit became very important suddenly.
ラビットは急に真面目になりました。

"Tigger," he said solemnly, "what happened just now?"
「ティガー。」彼は厳しく言いましたた。「今、何があったんだ？」

"Just when?" said Tigger a little uncomfortably.
「いつ？」ティガーは少し居心地悪そうに言いました。

"When you bounced Eeyore into the river."
「キミが飛び跳ねてイーヨーを川に落としたときだ。」

"I didn't bounce him."
「ボクじゃないよ。」

"You bounced me," said Eeyore gruffly.
「キミがしたんだ。」イーヨーは荒々しく言いました。

"I didn't really. I had a cough, and I happened to be behind Eeyore, and I said 'Grrrr--oppp--ptschschschz.'"
「ほんとにボクじゃないって。ボクは咳をしたんだ。たまたまイーヨーの後ろだったんだ。ボクは『グルルーラップープシュプシュ』って言っただけ。」

"Why?" said Rabbit, helping Piglet up, and dusting him. "It's all right, Piglet."
「どうして？」ラビットはピグレットを助け起こして、ホコリを叩きながら言いました。「大丈夫か、ピグレット。」

"It took me by surprise," said Piglet nervously.
「びっくりしたよ。」ピグレットは心配そうに言いました。

"That's what I call bouncing," said Eeyore. "Taking people by surprise. Very unpleasant habit. I don't mind Tigger being in the Forest," he went on,
「それが飛び跳ねって呼んでるものだ。人をびっくりさせる。とても不愉快なクセだ。ティガーが森にいるのはかまわない。」彼は続けました。

"because it's a large Forest, and there's plenty of room to bounce in it. But I don't see why he should come into my little corner of it, and bounce there. It isn't as if there was anything very wonderful about my little corner. Of course for people who like cold, wet, ugly bits it is something rather special, but otherwise it's just a corner, and if anybody feels bouncy "
「なぜなら森は広いから。そして飛び跳ねる場所もたくさんある。でもなぜボクの狭いコーナーに来て、飛び跳ねるのかが分からない。まるでボクの狭いコーナーに何か特別なものがあるみたいじゃないか。もちろん寒くて湿ったひどい所が好きな人にとっては、かなり特別なところだけど、そうじゃなかったら、ただのコーナーだ。もし飛び跳ねたくなったらー」

"I didn't bounce, I coughed," said Tigger crossly.
「ボクは飛び跳ねていないよ。咳をしたんだ。」ティガーは怒って言いました。

"Bouncy or coffy, it's all the same at the bottom of the river."
「飛び跳ねようと、咳しようと、川の底では同じことさ。」

"Well," said Rabbit, "all I can say Is--well, here's Christopher Robin, so he can say it."
「それじゃあ、」ラビットは言いました。「言えることは、ここにクリストファー・ロビンがいるから、彼に決めてもらおう。」

Christopher Robin came down from the Forest to the bridge,
クリストファー・ロビンは森から橋のところへ下りてきました。

feeling all sunny and careless, and just as if twice nineteen didn't matter a bit, as it didn't on such a happy afternoon,
明るく、自然に、まるで１９の２倍なんてどうでもいいように、とくに楽しい朝には。

and he thought that if he stood on the bottom rail of the bridge, and leant over, and watched the river slipping slowly away beneath him, then he would suddenly know everything that there was to be known, and he would be able to tell Pooh, who wasn't quite sure about some of it.
そしてもし橋の一番下の柵に立って、身を屈めて、下をゆっくり流れる川を見たら、突然そこにある全てのものを理解して、何にも知らないプーに教えてやれるのにと思いました。

But when he got to the bridge and saw all the animals there, then he knew that it wasn't that kind of afternoon, but the other kind, when you wanted to do something.
でも橋の所まで来ると、そこにみんなを見た、その時、そんなふうな朝ではない、何かをしたいと思うような、別の朝だと分かりました。
