Ch.6-6　彼らは流れる川を何も言わずに見ていました

"It's like this, Christopher Robin," began Rabbit.
「こういうことなんだ、クリストファー・ロビン。」ラビットは話し始めました。

"Tigger--"
「ティガーが・・」

"No, I didn't," said Tigger.
「ボクじゃないよ。」ティガーは言いました。

"Well, anyhow, there I was," said Eeyore.
「あの、とにかく、ボクがいたんだ。」イーヨーが言いました。

"But I don't think he meant to," said Pooh.
「でも、ティガーはそんなつもりじゃなかったと思うよ。」プーは言いました。

"He just is bouncy," said Piglet, "and he can't help it."
「彼はただ飛び跳ねて、」ピグレットは言いました。「どうにもならなかったんだ。」

"Try bouncing me, Tigger," said Roo eagerly. "Eeyore, Tigger's going to try me. Piglet, do you think--"
「ボクに飛び跳ねてみてよ、ティガー。」ルーは熱心に言いました。「イーヨー、ティガーがボクに飛び跳ねるからね。ピグレット、キミは・・」

"Yes, yes," said Rabbit, "we don't all want to speak at once. The point is, what does Christopher Robin think about it?"
「分かった。分かった。」ラビットは言いました。「ボクらは一度に喋るべきではない。要するに、クリストファー・ロビンはどう思うかだ。」

"All I did was I coughed," said Tigger.
「ボクは咳をしただけだ。」ティガーは言いました。

"He bounced," said Eeyore.
「飛び跳ねたよ。」イーヨーは言いました。

"Well, I sort of boffed," said Tigger.
「それじゃあ『咳飛び』したんだ。」ティガーは言いました。

"Hush!" said Rabbit, holding up his paw. "What does Christopher Robin think about it all? That's the point."
「シッ！」ラビットは手を上にあげた。「クリストファー・ロビンはそのことをどう思うのか？要するにそこだ。」

"Well," said Christopher Robin, not quite sure what it was all about, "I think--"
「そうだね。」クリストファー・ロビンは何がどうなっているのか分からずに、言いました。「思うに・・」

"Yes?" said everybody.
「何？」みんなは言いました。

"I think we all ought to play Poohsticks.!"
「ボクらは『プー棒』で遊ぶべきだと思うな！」

So they did.
それでみんなはそうしました。

And Eeyore, who had never played it before, won more times than anybody else;
そしてイーヨーは一度もその遊びをしたことがなかったのですが、誰よりも多く勝つことができました。

and Roo fell in twice,
ルーは２度川に落ちました。

the first time by accident and the second time on purpose,
最初は事故で、２度目はわざと。

because he suddenly saw Kanga coming from the Forest, and he knew he'd have to go to bed anyhow.
というのはカンガが突然森からやってきて、もう寝なければいけない時間だとわかったからです。

So then Rabbit said he'd go with them; and Tigger and Eeyore went off together,
それでラビットも一緒に帰ると言い、ティガーとイーヨーも帰って行きました。

because Eeyore wanted to tell Tigger How to Win at Poohsticks,
なぜならイーヨーはティガーに『プー棒』の勝ち方を教えたかったのです。

which you do by letting your stick drop in a twitchy sort of way, if you understand what I mean, Tigger;
それは棒をピクッとひねって落とすというやり方だよ、ティガー、言ってる意味がわかるよね。

nd Christopher Robin and Pooh and Piglet were left on the bridge by themselves.
そしてクリストファー・ロビンとプーとピグレットは橋の上に残りました。

For a long time they looked at the river beneath them, saying nothing,
長いこと、彼らは下を流れる川を何も言わずに見ていました。

and the river said nothing too,
川も何も言いません。

for it felt very quiet and peaceful on this summer afternoon.
というのはこんな夏の午後はとても静かで穏やかだと思ったからです。

"Tigger is all right really," said Piglet lazily.
「ティガーは大丈夫だね。」ピグレットはぼそっと言いました。

"Of course he is," said Christopher Robin.
「もちろんだよ。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。

"Everybody is really," said Pooh. "That's what I think," said Pooh. "But I don't suppose I'm right," he said.
「みんなも。」プーは言いました。「そうだと思うけど、」プーは言いました。「でもボクは大丈夫じゃないんだ。」

"Of course you are," said Christopher Robin.
「もちろん、キミも大丈夫だよ。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。
