Ch.6-2　それが「プー・スティック」というゲームの始まりでした

It did.
確かに、反対側から出てきました。

It kept on doing it.
それが続きました。

Then he dropped two in at once, and leant over the bridge to see which of them would come out first;
次に彼は一度に２個落として、どちらが先に出てくるか見ようと身を乗り出しました。

and one of them did;
一つが先に出てきました。

but as they were both the same size, he didn't know if it was the one which he wanted to win, or the other one.
でも同じ大きさだったのでどちらが勝って欲しかったのか分かりませんでした。

So the next time he dropped one big one and one little one, and the big one came out first,
だから今度は大きいのと小さいのを落とすと、大きいのが最初に出てきました。

which was what he had said it would do,
それは彼がそうだろうと思ったものでした。

and the little one came out last,
小さいほうが後でした。

which was what he had said it would do, so he had won twice...
そうなるだろうと思っていたので、二度勝ったことになる・・・

and when he went home for tea, he had won thirty-six and lost twenty-eight, which meant that he was- that he had-well, you take twenty-eight from thirty-six,
そして、お茶の時間に家に帰った時、彼は、そう、３６回中２８回勝ーー

and that's what he was.
それが彼でした。

Instead of the other way round.
その反対ではなくて。

And that was the beginning of the game called Poohsticks,
それが『プー・スティック』と呼ばれるゲームの始まりでした。

which Pooh invented, and which he and his friends used to play on the edge of the Forest.
プーが発明して、彼と友達が森のはずれでよく遊んだものでした。

But they played with sticks instead of fir-cones,
でも彼らはモミの実の代わりに木切れを使いました。

because they were easier to mark.
なぜなら印が付けやすかったからです。

Now one day Pooh and Piglet and Rabbit and Roo were all playing Poohsticks together.
さて、ある日、プーとピグレットとラビットとルーが一緒にプー・スティックをして遊んでいました。

They had dropped their sticks in when Rabbit said “Go!” and then they had hurried across to the other side of the bridge, and now they were all leaning over the edge, waiting to see whose stick would come out first.
彼らは自分の棒切れを、ラビットの『よーい、ドン！』で落とし、橋の反対側に行き、身を乗り出して、誰の棒切れが一番か見ようと待っていました。

But it was a long time coming,
でも長い時間がかかりました。

because the river was very lazy that day, and hardly seemed to mind if it didn't ever get there at all.
川がその日はとても怠けていて、棒切れがやって来るのを気にしていないようでした。

"I can see mine!" cried Roo. "No, I can't, it's something else. Can you see yours, Piglet? I thought I could see mine, but I couldn't. There it is! No, it isn't. Can you see yours, Pooh?"
「ボクのが見えた！」ルーが叫びました。「いや、違う、誰か他のだ。キミのは見える、ピグレット？ボクのが見えたと思ったけど、違った。ほら！いや、違う。キミのは見えた、プー？」

"No," said Pooh.
「いや。」プーは言いました。

"I expect my stick's stuck," said Roo. "Rabbit, my stick's stuck. Is your stick stuck, Piglet?"
「ボクの棒はひっかかったみたい。」ルーは言いました。「ラビット、ボクの棒はひっかかったよ。キミのもひっかかった、ピグレット？」

"They always take longer than you think," said Rabbit.
「思ったより時間がかかるんだよ。」ラビットは言いました。

"How long do you think they'll take?" asked Roo.
「どれ位かかると思う？」ルーは尋ねました。

"I can see yours, Piglet," said Pooh suddenly.
「キミのが見えたよ、ピグレット。」突然、プーは言いました。

"Mine's a sort of greyish one," said Piglet, not daring to lean too far over in case he fell in.
「ボクのはグレイだよ。」ピグレットは言いました。落ちるといけないのであえて身を乗り出すことはしませんでした。

"Yes, that's what I can see. It's coming over on to my side."
「そう、見えるよ。ボクのほうに来ている。」

Rabbit leant over further than ever, looking for his,
ラビットはさらに身を乗り出して、自分のを探しました。

and Roo wriggled up and down, calling out “Come on, stick! Stick, stick, stick!”
そして、ルーはあちこち体をくねらして、『おいで、棒切れ！棒切れ、棒切れ！』と叫びました。

and Piglet got very excited
そしてピグレットはとても興奮しました。

because his was the only one which had been seen, and that meant that he was winning.
なぜなら彼の棒だけが見えていて、それは彼の勝利を意味していたからです。

"It's coming!" said Pooh.
「来てるよ！」プーは言いました。

"Are you sure it's mine?" squeaked Piglet excitedly.
「ボクのだと分かる？」興奮してピグレットはかん高い声で言いました。

"Yes, because it's grey. A big grey one. Here it comes! A very--big--grey---- Oh, no, it isn't, it's Eeyore."
「うん。グレイだから。大きなグレイだ。来たよ！とてもー大きなーグレイのーああ、違う、イーヨーだ。」

And out floated Eeyore.
そしてイーヨーが浮いていました。

"Eeyore!" cried everybody.
「イーヨー！」みんなが叫びました。

Looking very calm, very dignified, with his legs in the air, came Eeyore from beneath the bridge.
とても落ち着いて堂々として、足を空中に出して、橋の下からイーヨーが出てきました。

"It's Eeyore!" cried Roo, terribly excited.
「イーヨーだ！」ルーがひどく興奮して叫びました。

"Is that so?" said Eeyore, getting caught up by a little eddy, and turning slowly round three times. "I wondered."
「そうかい？」イーヨーは小さな渦につかまってゆっくり３回まわって言いました。「そうかな。」
