Ch.5-2　「は！みんなに知らせなきゃ。」ラビットは言いました

"Bother!" said Rabbit. "He's gone out."
「チェッ！彼はいない。」ラビットは言いました。

He went back to the green front door, just to make sure,
もう１度確かめようと、彼は緑色の玄関に戻りました。

and he was turning away, feeling that his morning had got all spoilt, when he saw a piece of paper on the ground.
そして朝が台無しだ思いながら、向きを変えると、彼は地面の上に１枚の紙切れを見つけました。

And there was a pin in it, as if it had fallen off the door.
そしてドアから落ちたみたいにピンがついていました。

"Ha!" said Rabbit, feeling quite happy again. "Another notice!"
「は！別のメモだ！」ラビットは再び嬉しくなって言いました。

This is what it said:
それにはこう書いてありました。

GON OUT
BACKSON
BISY
BACKSON
C. R.

"Ha!" said Rabbit again. "I must tell the others."
「は！みんなに言わなくちゃ。」ラビットは再び言いました。

And he hurried off importantly.
そして、彼はもったいぶって急いで出かけました。

The nearest house was Owl's, and to Owl's House in the Hundred Acre wood he made his way.
一番近い家はアウルのところで、１００エーカーの森のアウルの家に出かけました。

He came to Owl's door, and he knocked and he rang,
彼はアウルの家に来て、ノックして、ベルを鳴らしました。

and he rang and he knocked, and at last Owl's head came out and said
さらにベルを鳴らして、ノックすると、ついにアウルの頭が出てきて、言いました。

"Go away, I'm thinking--oh, it's you?" which was how he always began.
「あっち行って、考えてるんだーおぅ、キミか？」彼がいつも話始めるやり方でした。

"Owl," said Rabbit shortly, "you and I have brains. The others have fluff. If there is any thinking to be done in this Forest--and when I say thinking I mean thinking--you and I must do it."
「アウル、」ラビットは短く言いました。「キミもボクも頭を持ってる。他の者は綿くずだ。もし森のなかで考え事をしなきゃならないときはー考え事だ、考え事のことだよーそれはキミとボクがしなきゃ。」

"Yes," said Owl. "I was."
「そうだね。ボクだった。」アウルは言いました。

"Read that."
「それ読んで。」

Owl took Christopher Robin's notice from Rabbit and looked at it nervously.
アウルはラビットからクリストファー・ロビンの張り紙を取って、神経質そうに見ました。

He could spell his own name WOL, and he could spell Tuesday so that you knew it wasn't Wednesday,
彼は自分の名前を WOL と書けるし、水曜日じゃないことがわかるように火曜日(Tuesday) と書くこともできました。

and he could read quite comfortably when you weren't looking over his shoulder and saying “Well?” all the time,
そして、肩越しに見ないで、いつも「それで？」と言わなければ、心地よく文字も読めました。

and he could-

"Well?" said Rabbit.
「それで？」ラビットは言いました。

"Yes," said Owl, looking Wise and Thoughtful. "I see what you mean. Undoubtedly."
「そうさ。キミが言いたいことは分かる。間違いない。」アウルは言いました。

彼は賢そうで考えているふうに見えました。

"Well?"
「それで？」

"Exactly," said Owl. "Precisely." And he added, after a little thought, "If you had not come to me, I should have come to you."
「その通り、まさしく。」アウルは言いました。そして、少し考えて付け加えました。「キミがボクのところに来なかったら、ボクがキミのところに行ってただろう。」

"Why?" asked Rabbit.
「どうして？」ラビットは言いました。

"For that very reason," said Owl, hoping that something helpful would happen soon.
「まさしくその理由でだよ。」アウルは何か役に立つことがすぐにでも起こることを期待して言いました。

"Yesterday morning," said Rabbit solemnly, "I went to see Christopher Robin. He was out. Pinned on his door was a notice!"
「昨日の朝、」ラビットは厳かに言いました。「クリストファー・ロビンに会いに行ったら、留守だった。ドアに張り紙がピンで止めてあった。」

"The same notice?"
「これと同じ張り紙？」

"A different one. But the meaning was the same. It's very odd."
「違う。でも意味はいっしょだ。おかしなことだ。」
