Ch.5-3　「だんだん謎が解けてきたぞ。」

"Amazing," said Owl, looking at the notice again, and getting, just for a moment, a curious sort of feeling that something had happened to Christopher Robin's back. "What did you do?"
「驚きだ。」アウルは再び張り紙を見て、ちょっとクリストファー・ロビンの背中に何かが起こったような奇妙な感じを持って、言いました。

「キミはどうした？」

"Nothing."
「何も。」

"The best thing," said Owl wisely.
「一番いいのは、」アウルは賢そうに言いました。

"Well?" said Rabbit again, as Owl knew he was going to.
「何？」ラビットは再び言いました。アウルはそう言うだろうと知っていたように。

"Exactly," said Owl.
「まさしく。」アウルは言いました。

For a little while he couldn't think of anything more;
しばらく彼は何も思いつきませんでした。

and then, all of a sudden, he had an idea.
それから、突然、考えがひらめきました。

"Tell me, Rabbit," he said, "the exact words of the first notice. This is very important. Everything depends on this. The exact words of the first notice."
「教えてくれ、ラビット。」彼は言いました。「最初の張り紙の正確な文章を。これはとても重要なことなんだ。全てがこれにかかっている。最初の張り紙の正確な文章。」

"It was just the same as that one really."
「それとほとんど同じだったよ。」

Owl looked at him,
アウルは彼を見ました。

and wondered whether to push him off the tree;
そして木から落とそうかと思いました。

but, feeling that he could always do it afterwards, he tried once more to find out what they were talking about.
しかし、後からでもできると思い、もう一度何のことを話していたのか見つけ出そうとしました。

"The exact words, please" he said, as if Rabbit hadn't spoken.
「正確な文章だ。」彼はラビットがまだ話していないかのように、言いました。

"It just said, 'Gone out. Backson.' Same as this, only this says 'Bisy Backson' too."
「こんなふうに書かれていたよ。『出かける。バックソン(Backson)』これとおんなじだ。ただこれには『忙しい。バックソン(Backson)』とも書いてある。」

Owl gave a great sigh of relief.
アウルはホッとした深いため息をつきました。

"Ah!" said Owl. "Now we know where we are."
「あー！」アウルは言いました。「だんだん謎が解けてきたぞ。」

"Yes, but where's Christopher Robin?" said Rabbit. "That's the point."
「そうかい。でもクリストファー・ロビンはどこにいるの？」ラビットは言いました。「そこが大事なとこだよ。」

Owl looked at the notice again.
アウルはその張り紙をもう一度見ました。

To one of his education the reading of it was easy.
彼の教養の一つにとって、読むことは簡単でした。

“Gone out, Backson. Bisy, Backson”-
『出かける。バックソン(Backson)。　忙しい。バックソン(Backson)』ー

just the sort of thing you'd expect to see on a notice.
まさに張り紙によく書いてあるもののようでした。

"It is quite clear what has happened, my dear Rabbit," he said. "Christopher Robin has gone out somewhere with Backson. He and Backson are busy together. Have you seen a Backson anywhere about in the Forest lately?"
「何が起こったかは明らかだ、ラビット。」彼は言いました。「クリストファー・ロビンはバックソン(Backson)とどこかへ出かけたんだ。彼とバックソン(Backson)はともに忙しい。最近森のどこかでバックソン(Backson)を見かけたかい？」

"I don't know," said Rabbit. "That's what I came to ask you. What are they like?"
「分からない。」ラビットは言いました。「それを聞きに来たんだよ。バックソン(Backson)ってどんなヤツ？」

"Well," said Owl, "the Spotted or Herbaceous Backson is just a--"
「そうだね。」アウルは言いました。「斑点があって草のようなバックソン(Backson)はちょうどー」

"At least," he said, "it's really more of a----"
「少なくとも、実際にはどちらかと言うとー」ラビットは言いました。

"Of course," he said, "it depends on the----"
「もちろんだ。それはーーによる。」アウルは言いました。

"Well," said Owl, "the fact is," he said, "I don't know what they're like," said Owl frankly.
「そうだね。実は、よく知らないんだ。」アウルは率直に言いました。

"Thank you," said Rabbit. And he hurried off to see Pooh.
「ありがとう。」ラビットは言いました。そしてプーのところに急ぎました。
