Ch.9-3　ボクの船は「浮かぶくま号」と呼ぼう

Then he had an idea,
その時プーにある考えが浮かびました。

and I think that for a Bear of Very Little Brain, it was a good idea. He said to himself:
頭の悪いクマにしてはとてもいい考えだ、と思いました。

"If a bottle can float, then a jar can float, and if a jar floats, I can sit on the top of it, if it's a very big jar."
「もし瓶が浮くんだったら、ツボだって浮く。もしツボが浮くなら、その上に座れる、もし大きなツボだったら。」

So he took his biggest jar, and corked it up.
そこで彼は一番大きなツボを持ってきて、コルクでふたをしました。

"All boats have to have a name," he said, "so I shall call mine The Floating Bear."
「船はみんな名前が付いてる。ボクの船は’浮かぶクマ号’と呼ぼう。」彼は言いました。

And with these words he dropped his boat into the water and jumped in after it.
こう言うと、彼は船を水に浮かべ、その後自分も飛び込びました。

For a little while Pooh and The Floating Bear were uncertain as to which of them was meant to be on the top,
しばらくの間、プーと’浮かぶクマ号’はどちらが上か分からない状態が続きました。

but after trying one or two different positions, they settled down with The Floating Bear underneath
しかし１度か２度位置を変えると、’浮かぶクマ号’が下に落ち着きました。

and Pooh triumphantly astride it, paddling vigorously with his feet.
するとプーは勝ち誇ったようにまたがって、一生懸命に足でこぎました。

Christopher Robin lived at the very top of the Forest.
クリストファー・ロビンは森の頂上に住んでいました。

It rained, and it rained, and it rained,
雨が降って、降って、降り続きました。

but the water couldn't come up to his house.
しかし、雨は彼の家までは来ませんでした。

It was rather jolly to look down into the valleys and see the water all round him,
そして谷間を見下ろして、まわりの水を見るのはとても気持ちのいいものでした。

but it rained so hard that he stayed indoors most of the time, and thought about things.
しかし、雨が激しかったので、ほとんど家の中で、考え事ばかりしていました。

Every morning he went out with his umbrella and put a stick in the place where the water came up to,
毎朝、彼は傘をさして出かけていき、水の上がってきた所に棒をさしました。

and every next morning he went out and couldn't see his stick any more,
そして翌朝出かけるともう棒は見えなくなっていました。

so he put another stick in the place where the water came up to, and then he walked home again,
だから、水の上がってきた所に別の棒をさして、家に帰りました。

and each morning he had a shorter way to walk than he had had the morning before. On the morning of the fifth day he saw the water all round him, and he new that for the first time in his life he was on a real island.
毎朝、彼は前の日の朝より歩く距離が短くなり、５日目の朝は彼の回りに水が来ていて、生まれて初めて本物の島にいることを知りました。

Which is very exciting.
それはとてもワクワクすることでした。

It was on this morning that Owl came flying over the water
アウルが飛んで来たのはこの日の朝のことでした。

to say “How do you do?” to his friend Christopher Robin.
彼は友達のクリストファー・ロビンに「元気かい？」と言いに来たのです。

"I say, Owl," said Christofer Robin, "isn't this fun? I'm on an island!"
「ねえ、アウル、楽しくないかい？島にいるよ。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。

"The atmospheric conditions have been very unfavourable lately," said Owl.
「大気の状態は最近好ましくないな。」アウルは言いました。

"The what?"
「何が？」

"It has been raining," explained Owl.
「雨が降ってるってことさ。」アウルは説明しました。

"Yes," said Christofer Robin. "It has."
「そうだね、降ってるね。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。

"The flood-level has reached unprecedented height."
「洪水のレベルは空前の高さだ。」

"The who?"
「誰が？」

"There's a lot of water about," explained Owl.
「回りに水が来てるってことさ。」アウルは説明しました。

"Yes," said Christofer Robin, "there is."
「そうだね。来てるね。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。

"However, the prospects are rapidly becoming more favourable. At any moment ー"
「しかしながら、予想は急速に好ましい方向に向かっている。今にもー」

"Have you seen Pooh?"
「プーを見かけた？」

"No. At any moment ー"
「いいや。今にもー」

"I hope he's all right," said Christofer Robin. "I've been wondering about him. I expect Piglet's with him. Do you think they're all right, Owl?"
「大丈夫だといいけど。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。「彼のことを心配していたんだ。ピグレットが一緒だといいけど。彼らは大丈夫だと思う、アウル？」

"I expect so. You see, at any momentー"
「大丈夫だと思うよ。いいかい、今にもー」

"Do go and see, Owl. Because Pooh hasn't got very much brain, and he might do something silly, and I do love him so, Owl. Do you see, Owl?"
「見に行ってよ、アウル。プーはあまり頭が良くないから、バカなことをするかも知れない。彼が心配なんだ。分かる、アウル？」

"That's all right," said Owl. "I'll go. Back directly."
「まかせて。行ってくる。すぐに戻るからね。」アウルは言いました。

And he flew off.
そして彼は飛び去って行きました。
