Ch.8-1　ぼくらは北極を見つけに行くんだ

ONE fine day Pooh had stumped up to the top of the Forest
ある日、プーは森の頂上までトボトボと歩いて来ました。

to see if his friend Christopher Robin was interested in Bears at all.
友達のクリストファー・ロビンがクマに興味があるかどうかを確かめるためです。

At breakfast that morning (a simple meal of marmalade spread lightly over a honeycomb or two) he had suddenly thought of a new song.
その日の朝食（１枚か２枚のハチの巣に軽くマーマレイドを広げた簡単な食事）の時に、彼は突然新しい歌を思い付いたのです。

It began like this:
こんな始まりです。

“Sing Ho! For the life of a Bear.”
歌え　ホー！　クマのために！

When he had got as far as this, he scratched his head, and thought to himself “That's a very good start for a song, but what about the second line?”
ここまで歌うと、頭を後ろに伸ばして、「歌にしては、とてもいいスタートだけど、２行めをどうしよう。」と、思いました。

He tried singing “Ho,” two or three times, but it didn't seem to help.
彼は２，３度「ホ」と歌ってみたけど、どうにもなりませんでした。

“Perhaps it would be better,” he thought, “if I sang Hi for the life of a Bear.”
「たぶん、クマのためにハイと歌ったら、良くなるかもしれない。」と、思いました。

So he sang it... but it wasn't.
それで、歌ったけど、良くなりませんでした。

“Very well, then,” he said, “I shall sing that first line twice, and perhaps if I sing it very quickly, I shall find myself singing the third and fourth lines before I have time to think of them, and that will be a Good Song. Now then:”
「よし、それじゃあ、最初の行を２度歌おう、おそらく速く歌ったら、考える間もなく、３行目と４行目が歌えるだろう。そしたら良い歌になるぞ。それじゃあ。」

歌え　ホー！　クマのために！ (Bear)

I don't much mind if it rains or snows,
雨でも雪でもかまわない (snows)

'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice new nose!
ボクの素敵な新しい鼻の上にたくさんのハチミツを持っているから (nose)

I don't much care if it snows or thaws,
雪でも雪溶けでもかまわない (thaws)

ボクの素敵なきれいな手にたくさんのハチミツを持っているから (paws)

Sing Ho! for a Bear!
歌え　ホー！　クマのために！

Sing Ho! for a Pooh!
歌え　ホー！　プーのために！ (Pooh)

And I'll have a little something in an hour or two!
１時間か２時間したらちょっとしたものを食べよう (two)

He was so pleased with this song that he sang it all the way to the top of the Forest,
彼はこの歌がとても気に入ったので森の頂上までずっと歌っていました。

“and if I go on singing it much longer,” he thought, “it will be time for the little something, and then the last line won't be true.” So he turned it into a hum instead.
「もっと長く歌い続けたら、ちょっとしたものを食べる時間になる。そうすれば、最後の行が本当でなくなる。」と、思い、代わりにハミングに替えました。

Christopher Robin was sitting outside his door, putting on his Big Boots.
クリストファー・ロビンはドアの外に座って、大きなブーツを履こうとしていました。

As soon as he saw the Big Boots, Pooh knew that an Adventure was going to happen, and he brushed the honey off his nose with the back of his paw, and spruced himself up as well as he could, so as to look Ready for Anything.
プーはその大きなブーツを見るや、冒険が始まるのだと分かったので、手の裏でハチミツを鼻から拭って、準備はできてるように見せるため、できるだけ身奇麗にしました。

"Good-morning, Christofer Robin", he called out.
「おはよう、クリストファー・ロビン」彼は声をかけけました。

"Hallo, Pooh Bear. I can't get this boot on."
「やあ、プー。このブーツ履けないんだよ。」

"That's bad," said Pooh.
「気の毒に。」プーは言いました。

"Do you think you could very kindly lean against me, 'cos I keep pulling so hard that I fall over backwards."
「ボクの背中を押してくれない？力いっぱい引っ張ると後ろに倒れちゃうんだ。」

Pooh sat down, dug his feet into the ground, and pushed hard against Christopher Robin's back,
プーは座って地面に足を埋めて、クリストファー・ロビンの背中を押しました。

and Christopher Robin pushed hard against his,
クリストファー・ロビンも彼の背中を押しました。

and pulled and pulled at his boot until he had got it on.
ブーツを引っ張って、引っ張って、やっとのことでブーツを履きました。

"And that's that," said Pooh. "What do we do next?"
「できたね。次は何するの？」と、プーは言いました。

"We are all going on an Expedition," said Christofer Robin, as he got up and brushed himself.
「ぼくらはみんなでこれからタンケンに出かけるんだ。」クリストファー・ロビンは立ち上がって、お尻を払いました。

"Going on an Expotition?" said Pooh eagerly. "I don't think I've ever been on one of those. Where are we going to on this expotition?"
「トンケン？行ったことがないな。このトンケンに乗ってどこに行くの？」プーは熱心にききました。

"Expedition, silly old Bear. It's got an 'x' in it."
「タンケンだよ、ばかなくまだなあ。綴りに’ｘ’が入っているんだ。」

"Oh!" said Pooh. "I know." But he didn't really.
「ああ、そうか。」本当は分かっていませんでした。

"We're going to discover the North Pole."
「ぼくらは北極を見つけに行くんだ。」

"Oh!" said Pooh again. "What is the North Pole?"
「ああ、」ともう一度言って、「北極って何？」と、尋ねました。
