Ch.7-2　カンガというのは一般的にどうもうな動物だ

"The best way," said Rabbit, "would be this.
「一番いい方法はこれだ。」ラビットが言いました。

The best way would be to steal Baby Roo and hide him, and then when Kanga says, 'Where's Baby Roo?' we say, 'Aha!'"
「一番いい方法は、ベイビー・ルーを盗んで、隠すことだ。そして、カンガが『ベイビー・ルーはどこ？』と言うとき、僕らが『アハッ！』って言う。」

"Aha!" said Pooh, practicing. "Aha! Aha! . . . Of course," he went on, "we could say 'Aha!' even if we hadn't stolen Baby Roo."
「アハッ！」プーは練習で言ってみました。「アハッ！アハッ！・・・もちろん、」彼は続けた。「たとえベイビー・ルーを盗まなくてもアハッ！って言えるよ。」

"Pooh," said Rabbit kindly, "you haven't any brain."
「プー、君って頭ないなあ。」ラビットはやさしく言いました。

"I know," said Pooh humbly.

「わかってるよ。」プーは謙遜して言いました。

"We say 'Aha!' so that Kanga knows that we know where Baby Roo is. 'Aha!' means 'We'll tell you where Baby Roo is, if you promise to go away from the Forest and never come back.' Now don't talk while I think."
「僕らがベイビー・ルーがどこにいるか知ってるということをカンガに知らせるために『アハッ！』って言うんだ。『アハッ！』は『もし君が森から出て行って二度と戻らないって約束するならベイビー・ルーがどこにいるか教えてあげる。』っていう意味なんだ。考えている間、話しかけないで。」

Pooh went into a corner and tried saying "Aha!" in that sort of voice.
プーは隅に行って、そんなふうな声で「アハッ！」っと言ってみました。

Sometimes it seemed to him that it did mean what Rabbit said, and sometimes it seemed to him that it didn't.
ラビットが言ってたように聞こえることもあったし、そうでないこともありました。

"I suppose it's just practice," he thought. "I wonder if; Kanga will have to practice too so as to understand it."
「ただの練習だ。カンガも理解できるように練習するのかなあ。」と、思いました。

"There's just one thing," said Piglet, fidgeting a bit. "I was talking to Christofer Robin, and he said that a Kanga was Generally Regarded as One of the Fiercer Animals. I am not frightened of Fierce Animal in the ordinary way, but it is well known that, if One of the Fiercer Animal is Deprived of Its Young, it becomes as fierce as Two of the Fiercer Animals. In which case 'Aha!' is perhaps a foolish thing to say."
「１つだけ。」ピグレットが少しもじもじして言いました。「クリストファー・ロビンと話したんだけど、彼が言うにはカンガというのは一般的に獰猛な動物だとみなされているんだって。ボクは普通獰猛な動物は怖くないけど、獰猛な動物が子供を奪われると二倍獰猛になることはよく知られているよね。そんな時に『アハッ！』って言うのは馬鹿げてるよ。」

“Piglet,” said Rabbit, taking out a pencil, and licking the end of it,
「ピグレット。」ラビットは鉛筆を出して先を舐めながら言いました。

“you haven't any pluck.”
「君には勇気がない。」

“It is hard to be brave,” said Piglet, sniffing slightly, “when you're only a Very Small Animal.”
「勇敢になるのは難しいよ。君がとても小さな動物だったとしたら。」ピグレットは少し鼻をくんくんさせながら言いました。

Rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said:
ラビットは、何か忙しく書き始めていましたが、見上げて言いました。

“It is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us.”
「これから起こる冒険で君が役に立つのは君が小さな動物だからだよ。」

Piglet was so excited at the idea of being Useful that he forgot to be frightened any more,
ピグレットは役に立つという考えにとてもワクワクしてもうこれ以上怖がるのを忘れました。

and when Rabbit went on to say that Kangas were only Fierce during the winter months, being at other times of an Affectionate Disposition, he could hardly sit still, he was so eager to begin being useful at once.
そしてラビットが、カンガは冬の間だけ獰猛で、それ以外は優しい性格だと言うと、じっと座っておれなくて、すぐに熱心に役に立ち始めました。

"What about me?" said Pooh sadly. "I suppose I shan't be useful?"
「ボクはどうなの？役に立たないの？」プーは淋しそうに言いました。

"Never mind, Pooh," said Piglet comfortingly. "Another time perhaps."
「気にしないで、プー。また別の機会に。」ピグレットは慰めるように言いました。

"Without Pooh," said Rabbit solemnly as he sharpened his pencil, "the adventure would be impossible."
「プーなしでは、冒険はありえない。」ラビットは鉛筆をとがらして厳かに言いました。

"Oh!" said Piglet, and tried not to look disappointed.
「おう！」ピグレットはがっかりした様子を見せないようにして、言いました。

But Pooh went into a corner of the room and said proudly to himself,
しかし、プーは部屋の隅に行き、誇らしげに言いました。

“Impossible without Me! That sort of Bear.”
「ボクなしではありえない！やはりそんなクマなんだ。」

“Now listen all of you,” said Rabbit when he had finished writing,
「さあ、みんな聞いて。」、ラビットは書き終えると言いました。

and Pooh and Piglet sat listening very eagerly with their mouths open.
プーとピグレットは口を開けて、熱心に聞いていました。
