Ch.5-6　助けて！ヘファランプだ！ホフ、ホフ、ホラランプ！

Of course Pooh would be with him, and it was much more Friendly with two.
もちろん、プーも一緒だろう。２人のほうが安心だった。

But suppose Heffalumps were Very Fierce with Pigs and Bears?
でも、ヘファランプがブタとクマに獰猛だったらどうしよう。

Wouldn't it be better to pretend that he had a headache, and couldn't go up to the Six Pine Trees this morning?
今朝は頭が痛くて、６本の松の木には行けないふりをしたほうがいいのかな。

But then suppose that it was a very fine day, and there was no Heffalump in the trap, here he would be, in bed all the morning, simply wasting his time for nothing. What should he do?
でも、とても天気がいいのに、ヘファランプは罠にかかっていなかったら、ボクはここに午前中ずっと寝てて、無駄に時間を過ごすことになる。どうしたらいいだろうか。

And then he had a Clever Idea.
その時、賢い考えが浮かびました。

He would go up very quietly to the Six Pine Trees now, peep very cautiously into the Trap, and see if there was a Heffalump there. And if there was, he would go back to bed, and if there wasn't, he wouldn't.
今、こっそり起きて６本の松の木まで行き、罠の中を注意深く覗いて、もし、ヘファランプがいたら、ベッドに戻ったらいいし、いなかったら、そうしなければいい。

So off he went.
それで、彼は出かけました。

At first he thought that there wouldn't be a Heffalump in the Trap,
最初、彼は罠にへファランプはいないと思いました。

and then he thought that there would,
それから、いると思いました。

and as he got nearer he was sure that there would,
そして近づくにつれ、いると確信しました。

because he could hear it heffalumping about it like anything.
なぜなら、ファランプのような声で激しく鳴いているのが聞こえたからでした。

“Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear!” said Piglet to himself.
「あれっ、あれっ、あれっ。」ピグレットは言いました。

And he wanted to run away.
彼は逃げ出したかったのですが、。

But somehow, having got so near, he felt that he must just see what a Heffalump was like.
ともかくここまで近づいたのだから、ヘファランプがどんなものか確かめなければならないと思いました。

So he crept to the side of the Trap and looked in. . . .
だから、彼はそっと罠の側まで這って行き、覗き込みました・・・

And all the time Winnie-the-Pooh had been trying to get the honey-jar off his head.
そして、この間ずっと、プーは頭からツボを取ろうとしていました。

The more he shook it, the more tightly it stuck.
ツボを振れば振るほど、きつくはまってしまいました。

“Bother!” he said, inside the jar,
「チェッ！」彼はツボの中で言いました。そして、

and “Oh, help!” and, mostly, “Ow!”
「オウ、助けて！」ほとんど「オウ」と言っていました。

And he tried bumping it against things, but as he couldn't see what he was bumping it against, it didn't help him;
彼は何かにぶつけましたが、何にぶつけているのか分からないので、何の役にもたちません。

and he tried to climb out of the Trap, but as he could see nothing but jar, and not much of that, he couldn't find his way.
彼は、罠からよじ登ろうとしましたが、ツボ以外何も見えずに、それもうまく行かず、進めませんでした。

So at last he lifted up his head, jar and all, and made a loud, roaring noise of Sadness and Despair... and it was at that moment that Piglet looked down.
そしてとうとう、頭を上げて、全部ツボでしたが、大きな悲しみと絶望の叫びを上げました・・・ピグレットが見下ろしたのはその時でした。

“Help, help!” cried Piglet, “a Heffalump, a Horrible Heffalump!”
「助けて、助けて！ヘファランプだ、恐ろしいヘファランプだ！」と叫びました。

and he scampered off as hard as he could, still crying out, “Help, help, a Herrible Hoffalump! Hoff, Hoff, a Hellible Horralump! Holl, Holl, a Hoffable Hellerump!”
彼は出来る限り小走りで走り、「助けて、助けて！ヘファランプ、恐ろしいヘファランプ！ホフ、ホフ、ヘリブル　ホラランプ！ホル、ホル、ホファブル　ヘレランプ！」と叫びました。

And he didn't stop crying and scampering until he got to Christopher Robin's house.
彼はクリストファー・ロビンの家に着くまで、走りながら叫び続けていました。

"Whatever's the matter, Piglet?" said Christofer Robin, who was just getting up.
「一体全体どうしたんだ、ピグレット？」ちょうど起きようとしていたクリストファー・ロビンが言いました。

"Heff," said Piglet, breathing so hard that he could hardly speak, "a Hell ー a Heff ー a Heffalump."
「ヘフ、ヘルーヘフーヘファランプ。」ピグレットはとても激しく呼吸していたのでほとんど喋れませんでした。

"Where?"
「どこに？」

"Up there," said Piglet, waving his paw.
「向こうだよ。」ピグレットは手を振りながら言いました。

"What did it look like?"
「どんな姿だった？」

"Like ー like ー It had the biggest head you ever saw, Christofer Robin. A great enormous thing, like ー like nothing. A huge big ー well, like a ー I don't know ー like an enormous big nothing. Like a jar."
「ちょうど、ちょうど、これまで見た中で一番大きな頭だよ、クリストファー・ロビン。バカでかくて、たとえようもない。でかくて、たとえばー分からないけど ー バカでかい見たこともない。ツボのような。」

"Well," said Christofer Robin, putting on his shoes, "I shall go and look at it. Come on."
「よし、見に行こう、さあ！」クリストファー・ロビンは靴を履いて言いました。

Piglet wasn't afraid if he had Christopher Robin with him, so off they went....
クリストファー・ロビンが一緒だったら、ピグレットは怖くありませんでした。２人は出かけました・・・

"I can hear it, can't you?" said Piglet anxiously, as they got near.
「聞こえるよね。」近づいた時、ピグレットは心配そうに言いました。

"I can hear something." said Christofer Robin.
「何か聞こえる。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。

それはプーが見つけた木の根っこに頭をぶつけている音でした。

"There!" said Piglet. "Isn't it awful?" And he held on tight to Christofer Robin's hand.
「ほら！怖くない？」ピグレットは言って、クリストファー・ロビンの手をしっかりつかみました。

Suddenly Christopher Robin began to laugh... and he laughed... and he laughed... and he laughed.
突然、クリストファー・ロビンは笑い始めました・・・笑って・・・笑って・・・笑いました。

And while he was still laughing—Crash went the Heffalump's head against the tree-root, Smash went the jar, and out came Pooh's head again....
笑っているうちに、ヘファランプの頭が木の根っこに当たって、潰れて粉々になって、プーの頭が現れました・・・

Then Piglet saw what a Foolish Piglet he had been, and he was so ashamed of himself that he ran straight off home and went to bed with a headache.
その時、ピグレットは自分が何てバカだったのかを理解して、彼はとても恥ずかしくて、一目散に家に帰り、頭痛でベッドに寝込んでしまいました。

But Christopher Robin and Pooh went home to breakfast together.
しかし、クリストファー・ロビンとプーは朝食を食べに一緒に家に帰りました。

"Oh, Bear!" said Christofer Robin. "How I do love you!"
「ねえ！クマさん、大好きだよ。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。

"So do I," said Pooh.
「ボクもだよ。」プーは言いました。
