Ch.5-5　チェッ！ヘファランプが食べてしまってる

And off Piglet trotted to his house TRESPASSERS W, while Pooh made his preparations for bed.
ピグレットは TRESPASSERS W の自分の家に向い、プーは寝る準備をしました。

Some hours later, just as the night was beginning to steal away, Pooh woke up suddenly with a sinking feeling.
数時間後、夜がふけ始めると、プーは突然沈み込むような感じで目を覚ましました。

He had had that sinking feeling before,
以前にもこういう感じを持ったことがありました。

and he knew what it meant.
彼はそれがどういう意味か分かっていました。

He was hungry.
つまり、腹が減ってるってことです。

So he went to the larder, and he stood on a chair and reached up to the top shelf,
そこで彼は戸棚に行き、椅子に乗って、１番上の棚に手を伸ばしました。

and found—nothing.
でもー何もありませんでした。

"That's funny," he thought. "I know I had a jar of honey there. A full jar, full of honey right up to the top, and it had HUNNY written on it, so that I should know it was honey. That's very funny."

「おかしい。ハチミツのツボがあったはずなのに。ハチミツが一番上までいっぱい入っていて、ハチミツだとわかるように『ハチミツ』って書いておいた。おかしい。」

And then he began to wander up and down, wondering where it was and murmuring a murmur to himself.
それから彼は行ったり来たりしながら、どこに行ったのだろうとぶつぶつひとり言を言いました。

Well, it's funny.
おかしい

He had murmured this to himself three times in a singing sort of way,
彼は歌うような調子で、３回つぶやきました。

when suddenly he remembered.
その時、突然思い出しました。

He had put it into the Cunning Trap to catch the Heffalump.
ヘファランプを捕まえるために巧妙な罠の中に置いてきたんだ。

“Bother!” said Pooh. “It all comes of trying to be kind to Heffalumps.” And he got back into bed.
「チェッ！ヘファランプに親切にしようとしたからこうなったんだ。」彼はベッドに戻りました。

But he couldn't sleep.
でも眠れませんでした。

The more he tried to sleep, the more he couldn't.
眠ろうとすればするほど、眠れません。

He tried Counting Sheep,
彼は羊を数えてみました。

which is sometimes a good way of getting to sleep,
眠るのにいい方法なのです。

and, as that was no good, he tried counting Heffalumps.
役にたたなかったので、ヘファランプを数えてみました。

And that was worse.
ますます悪くなりました。

Because every Heffalump that he counted was making straight for a pot of Pooh's honey, and eating it all.
彼が数えたヘファランプがプーのハチミツのツボの所へ行き、全部食べているのです。

For some minutes he lay there miserably, but when the five hundred and eighty-seventh Heffalump was licking its jaws, and saying to itself, “Very good honey this, I don't know when I've tasted better,” Pooh could bear it no longer.
しばらく彼は惨めに横になっていましたが、５８７番目のヘファランプがツボを舐めて、「これはおいしい。これよりおいしいのは食べたことがない。」と言ったとき、プーはもう我慢できませんでした。

He jumped out of bed, he ran out of the house, and he ran straight to the Six Pine Trees.
彼はベッドから飛び起きて、走って家を出て、まっすぐ６本の松の木の所へ行きました。

The Sun was still in bed,
お日様はまだ眠っていました。

but there was a lightness in the sky over the Hundred Acre Wood
しかし、１００エーカーの森の空は明るく、

which seemed to show that it was waking up and would soon be kicking off the clothes.
目を覚まして服を脱ぎ捨てようとしているように見えました。

In the half-light the Pine Trees looked cold and lonely,
薄明かりの中で、松の木は冷たく孤独に見えました。

and the Very Deep Pit seemed deeper than it was,
とても深い穴は実際より深く見えました。

and Pooh's jar of honey at the bottom was something mysterious, a shape and no more.
底にあるプーのハチミツのツボはどこか神秘的で、ツボにはみえません。

But as he got nearer lo it his nose told him that it was indeed honey,
しかし、近づいていくと、彼の鼻が確かにハチミツだと教えてくれました。

and his tongue came out and began to polish up his mouth, ready for it.
そして、舌を出して、口を舐めて、ハチミツを食べる準備ができました。

“Bother!” said Pooh, as he got his nose inside the jar.
「チェッ！」プーは鼻をツボの中に入れた時、言いました。

“A Heffalump has been eating it!”
「ヘファランプが食べている。」

And then he thought a little and said,
彼は少し考えて、言いました。

“Oh, no, I did. I forgot.”
「違う、ボクだった。忘れてた。」

Indeed, he had eaten most of it.
実際、彼は大部分を食べてしまっていました。

But there was a little left at the very bottom of the jar, and he pushed his head right in, and began to lick....
しかし、ツボの１番下に少しだけ残っていたのを、彼は頭を突っ込んで舐め始めました。

By and by Piglet woke up. As soon as he woke he said to himself, “Oh!”
やがて、ピグレットも目を覚まして、起きるや否や、「おっ！」と言いました。

Then he said bravely, “Yes,” and then, still more bravely, “Quite so.”
それから勇敢に、「そうだった。」と言って、さらに勇敢に、「ほんとにそうだった。」と言いました。

But he didn't feel very brave,
しかし、彼はあまり勇敢だとは思いませんでした。

for the word which was really jiggeting about in his brain was “Heffalumps.”
というのは、彼の頭を巡らしていた言葉は、「ヘファランプ」だったのです。

What was a Heffalump like?
ヘファランプってどんなやつだろう？

Was it Fierce?
獰猛だろうか？

Did it come when you whistled?
口笛を吹いたら来るのかな？

And how did it come?
どんなふうに来るんだろう？

Was it Fond of Pigs at all?
ブタが好物だろうか？

If it was Fond of Pigs, did it make any difference what sort of Pig?
もしブタが好物なら、ブタの種類で違いがあるだろうか？

Supposing it was Fierce with Pigs, would it make any difference if the Pig had a grandfather called TRESPASSERS WILLIAM?
ブタに獰猛だとしたら、TRESPASSERS WILLIAM というおじいちゃんを持っているかで違いがあるだろうか？

He didn't know the answer to any of these questions...
これらの疑問に対する答えは分かりませんでした。

and he was going to see his first Heffalump in about an hour from now!
そして今から約１時間後には、最初のへファランプに会うことになっていました。
