Ch.9-5　「この汚いふきんはいらないでしょう？」

When they got to Owl's old house, they found everybody else there except Eeyore.
彼らがアウルの昔の家に着いたとき、イーヨー以外のみんながそこにいました。

Christopher Robin was telling them what to do, and Rabbit was telling them again directly afterwards, in case they hadn't heard,
クリストファー・ロビンは彼らにすることを言って、ラビットは彼らが聞いていないといけないので、すぐ後にもう一度彼らに繰り返しました。

and then they were all doing it.
そして彼らは自分のすることをしていました。

They had got a rope and were pulling Owl's chairs and pictures and things out of his old house
彼らはロープを持って、アウルのイスや絵やその他のものを古い家から引っ張り出していました。

so as to be ready to put them into his new one.
それでそれらを新しい家に運び込む準備ができました。

Kanga was down below tying the things on,
カンガは下の方でそれらをヒモで結んでいました。

and calling out to Owl,
そしてアウルに叫びました。

"You won't want this dirty old dishcloth any more, will you, and what about this carpet, it's all in holes," and Owl was calling back indignantly,
「この汚いふきんは要らないでしょう。このカーペットはどうするの。穴だらけよ。」するとアウルは怒って叫び返しました。

"Of course I do! It's just a question of arranging the furniture properly, and it isn't a dish-cloth, it's my shawl."
「もちろん、要るよ！家具の片付け方の問題だ、それにそれはふきんじゃない、ボクのショールだ。」

Every now and then Roo fell in and came back on the rope with the next article,
時々、ルーが落ちて、次の品物と一緒にロープにつかまって出てきました。

which flustered Kanga a little
そのことがカンガを少し慌てさせました。

because she never knew where to look for him.
なぜなら彼女はどこを探せばよいか分からなかったからです。

So she got cross with Owl and said that his house was a Disgrace, all damp and dirty, and it was quite time it did tumble down. Look at that horrid bunch of toadstools growing out of the corner there !
だから彼女はアウルに腹を立てて彼の家は恥だ、湿ってて汚いしちょうど崩れる頃だったのよ。あそこの床から生えている嫌な毒キノコの束を見てごらん！と言いました。

So Owl looked down, a little surprised
それでアウルが見ると、少し驚きました。

because he didn't know about this,
彼はそのことを知らなかったのです。

and then gave a short sarcastic laugh, and explained that that was his sponge, and that if people didn't know a perfectly ordinary bath-sponge when they saw it, things were coming to a pretty pass.
それで嫌味な笑いをして、あれはスポンジだ、そして人が見て、全く普通の風呂用のスポンジだと分からなければ、物はなんでも古くなるものさと説明しました。

"Well!" said Kanga,
「ねえ！」カンガは言いました。

and Roo fell in quickly, crying, "I must see Owl's sponge! Oh, there it is! Oh, Owl! Owl, it isn't a sponge, it's a spudge! Do you know what a spudge is, Owl? It's when your sponge gets all--"
そしてルーが素早く落ちて、泣きながら、「ボク、アウルのスポンジを見る！おーあった！アウル、アウル、スポンジじゃないよ。スパッジだ！スパッジって何か知ってる、アウル？スポンジがボロボロに・・・」

and Kanga said, “Roo, dear!” very quickly,
そしてカンガは素早く『ルー！』言いました。

because that's not the way to talk to anybody who can spell TUESDAY.
なぜなら TUESDAY（火曜日）の綴りが分かる人と話す話し方ではないからです。

But they were all quite happy when Pooh and Piglet came along,
でもプーとピグレットがやって来ると彼らはとても喜びました。

and they stopped working in order to have a little rest and listen to Pooh's new song.
そして彼らは少し休憩して、プーの新しい歌を聞こうと、作業を止めました。

So then they all told Pooh how good it was,
それから彼らはいかにいい歌かをプーに告げました。

and Piglet said carelessly, It is good, isn't it? I mean as a song.”
ピグレットは『いいね、歌にしては。』とうっかりして言いました。

"And what about the new house?" asked Pooh. "Have you found it, Owl?"
「で、新しい家はどうしたの？」プーは言いました。「もう見つけた、アウル？」

"He's found a name for it," said Christopher Robin, lazily nibbling at a piece of grass, "so now all he wants is the house."
「名前だけは見つけてる。」クリストファー・ロビンは何気なく草を噛みながら言いました。「だからあとは家だけだ。」

"I am calling it this," said Owl importantly,
「ボクは家をこう呼んでいる。」アウルはもったいぶって言いました。

and he showed them what he had been making.
それから彼はみんなに自分が作っていたものを見せました。

It was a square piece of board with the name of the house painted on it:
それは四角い板で、家の名前がペンキで書いてありました。

THE WOLERY

It was at this exciting moment that something came through the trees, and bumped into Owl.
何かが木の間をやって来てドスンとアウルにぶつかったのはまさにこの瞬間でした。

The board fell to the ground, and Piglet and Roo bent over it eagerly.
板が地面に落ちて、ピグレットとルーが熱心にその上をかがみ込みました。

"Oh. it's you," said Owl crossly.
「おー、キミか。」アウルは怒って言いました。

"Hallo, Eeyore!" said Rabbit. "There you are! Where have you been?" Eeyore took no notice of them.
「やあ、イーヨー！」ラビットは言いました。「来たね！今までどこにいたの？」 イーヨーは彼らに注意を払うことなく、

"Good morning, Christopher Robin," he said brushing away Roo and Piglet, and sitting down on THE WOLERY. "Are we alone?"
「おはよう、クリストファー・ロビン。」と、ルーとラビットを払い除けて、 THE WOLERY の板の上に座り、「他に誰もいない？」と、言いました。
