Ch.8-6　「もし、ヒモが切れたらどうするの？」ピグレットはたずねました

Piglet said hurriedly that he had been getting bigger lately, and couldn't possibly, much as he would like to,
ピグレットは最近太ってきたから、やりたいけどおそらくできないだろうと急いで言いました。

and Owl said that he had had his letter-box made bigger lately in case he got bigger letters, so perhaps Piglet might,
アウルは大きな手紙が来るといけないから郵便箱を大きくしたのでおそらくピグレットならできると言いました。

and Piglet said,
ピグレットは、

"But you said the necessary you-know-whats wouldn't,"
「でも、キミはなくてはならない例のあれはできないって言ってたよね。」

and Owl said,
アウルは言いました。

"No, they won't, so it's no good thinking about it,"
「絶対できない、だからそれを考えても無駄だよ。」

and Piglet said
ピグレットは言いました。

"Then we'd better think of something else,"
「じゃあ、他のことを考えたほうがいいね。」

and began to at once.
そしてすぐに考え始めました。

But Pooh's mind had gone back to the day when he had saved Piglet from the flood,
しかしプーの頭は洪水からピグレットを救った日のことを考えていました。

nd everybody had admired him so much; and as that didn't often happen, he thought he would like it to happen again.
みんなが彼を褒めてくれた。 そんなことはあまり起こらないので、もう一度起こってくれたらと思いました。

And suddenly, just as it had come before, an idea came to him.
すると突然、以前そうだったように、アイデアがひらめきました。

"Owl," said Pooh, "I have thought of something."
「アウル。」プーは言いました。「ちょっと考えたんだ。」

"Astute and Helpful Bear," said Owl.
「機敏な役に立つクマだ。」アウルは言いました。

Pooh looked proud at being called a stout and helpful bear,
プーは勇敢な役に立つクマだと言われ誇りに思いました。

and said modestly that he just happened to think of it.
そして控えめにたまたまひらめいたと言いました。

You tied a piece of string to Piglet, and you flew up to the letter-box with the other end in your beak, and you pushed it through the wire and brought it down to the floor, and you and Pooh pulled hard at this end, and Piglet went slowly up at the other end.
ピグレットにヒモを結びつけて、キミがヒモの反対の端を持って郵便箱まで飛んで、ヒモを通して、それを持ってくる。 そしてキミとプーがせっせと引っ張る。 するとピグレットが反対側の端でゆっくり上がる。

And there you were.
それで終わり。

"And there Piglet is," said Owl. "If the string doesn't break."
「そしてピグレットがいる。もしヒモが切れなかったら。」

"Supposing it does?" asked Piglet, really wanting to know.
「切れたらどうする？」ピグレットは本当に知りたそうに尋ねました。

"Then we try another piece of string."
「その時は別のヒモでやろう。」

This was not very comforting to Piglet,
これはピグレットにとって気持ちのいいものではありませんでした。

because however many pieces of string they tried pulling up with, it would always be the same him coming down;
なぜならたとえ引っ張り上げるヒモが何本あろうと、彼が落ちるのには変わりがないからです。

but still, it did seem the only thing to do.
でもそれしかないように思われました。

So with one last look back in his mind at all the happy hours he had spent in the Forest not being, pulled up to the ceiling by a piece of string, Piglet nodded bravely at Pooh and said that it was a Very Clever pup-pup-pup Clever pup-pup Plan.
それで最後に、ヒモで天井まで引き上げられることではなくて、森で過ごした楽しい時間を思い返して、ピグレットは勇敢にプーに頷き、それはとても賢いプ、プ、プ、賢いプ、プ、プランだと言いました。

"It won't break," whispered Pooh comfortingly, "because you're a Small Animal, and I'll stand underneath, and if you save us all, it will be a Very Grand Thing to talk about afterwards, and perhaps I'll make up a Song, and people will say 'It was so grand what Piglet did that a Respectful Pooh Song was made about it!'"
「切れないよ。」プーは慰めるように言いました。「キミはとても小さい動物だから。ボクが下にいてあげる。もしキミがボクらを救ったら、後々語るに偉大なことになるだろう。そしてたぶんボクが歌を作って、みんなは、ピグレットがしたことはとても偉大なことで、そのために『尊敬すべきプーの歌』が作られたのだと言うだろう。」

Piglet felt much better after this, and when everything was ready, and he found himself slowly going up to the ceiling, he was so proud that he would have called out “Look at Me!” if he hadn't been afraid that Pooh and Owl would let go of their end of the string and look at him.
ピグレットはこの後、気分がよくなり、すべての準備が整って、自分がゆっくりと天井に持ち上げられていたとき、彼はとても誇りに感じて、もしプーとアウルがヒモの端を放すのではないかと思わなければ、『ボクを見て！』と叫んでいたことでしょう。

"Up we go!" said Pooh cheerfully.
「昇っているよ！」ピグレットは元気に言いました。

"The ascent is proceeding as expected," said Owl helpfully.
「上昇は予定通りに進んでいる。」アウルはそれを補足して言いました。

Soon it was over.
すぐに終わりました。

Piglet opened the letter-box and climbed in.
ピグレットは郵便箱を開けて中に入りました。

Then, having untied himself, he began to squeeze into the slit, through which in the old days when front doors were front doors, many an unexpected letter that WOL had written to himself, had come slipping.
それから、ヒモを解いて、玄関が玄関だった頃、WOLが自分に書いた多くの予期せぬ手紙が滑り込んだ隙間に入り始めました。
