Ch.7-3　「彼を北極に連れて行こう。」ラビットは言いました

Piglet felt very glad about this,
ピグレットはこれを聞いて嬉しく思いました。

and he saw at once that what they were going to do to Tigger was a good thing to do,
そしてすぐに彼らがティガーに対してしていることがいいことだと分かりました。

and as Pooh and Rabbit were doing it with him, it was a thing which even a Very Small Animal could wake up in the morning and be comfortable about doing.
そしてプーやラビットも一緒にしているので、とても小さな動物でも朝起きて、心地よくなれるものでした。

So the only question was, where should they lose Tigger?
だから、ただ１つの問題はどこにティガーを置いてくるかでした。

"We'll take him to the North Pole," said Rabbit, "because it was a very long explore finding it, so it will be a very long explore for Tigger un-finding it again."
「彼を北極に連れて行こう。」ラビットは言いました。「なぜなら、北極は探すのにとても長い冒険だ。だから、ティガーにとっては見つけにくい長い冒険になるだろう。」

It was now Pooh's turn to feel very glad,
今度はプーが喜ぶ番でした。

because it was he who had first found the North Pole, and when they got there, Tigger would see a notice which said, “Discovered by Pooh, Pooh found it,”
なぜなら最初に北極を見つけたのはプーだったし、彼らが北極に着いた時、『プーによって発見される、プーが見つけた』という看板をティガーが見るだろうからです。

and then Tigger would know, which perhaps he didn't now,
すると、ティガーは、これまで知らなかった、プーの一面を知るだろう。

the sort of Bear Pooh was. That sort of Bear.
そのようなクマなのです。

So it was arranged that they should start next morning, and that Rabbit, who lived near Kanga and Roo and Tigger, should now go home and ask Tigger what he was doing to-morrow, because if he wasn't doing anything, what about coming for an explore and getting Pooh and Piglet to come too?
それで、次の朝、出発することにして、ラビットが、カンガやルーやティガーの近くに住んでいたので、行って、ティガーに明日は何か予定があるか、何も予定がなければ、探検に行かないか、プーとピグレットも誘って、と尋ねることにしました。

And if Tigger said “Yes” that would be all right,
そしてもしティガーが『行く。』と言えば、それでよし。

and if he said “No “
もし『いやだ。』と言えば、

"He won't," said Rabbit. "Leave it to me." And he went off busily.
「彼は絶対行かないだろう。」ラビットは言いました。「それはボクにまかせてくれ。」そして彼は忙しそうに出かけて行きました。

The next day was quite a different day.
翌日はまったく違った１日でした。

Instead of being hot and sunny, it was cold and misty.
太陽が出て暑いかわりに、寒くて霧が出ていました。

Pooh didn't mind for himself, but when he thought of all the honey the bees wouldn't be making, a cold and misty day always made him feel sorry for them.
プー自身は気になりませんでしたが、ミツバチがハチミツを作らないことを考えると、寒くて霧の日はミツバチに対して気の毒に感じました。

He said so to Piglet when Piglet came to fetch him, and Piglet said that he wasn't thinking of that so much, but of how cold and miserable it would be being lost all day and night on the top of the Forest.
ピグレットが迎えに来たとき、彼にそう言うと、ピグレットはそのことはあまり考えないけど、昼も夜も森の頂上に取り残されるのはどんなに寒くて惨めだろうと言いました。

But when he and Pooh had got to Rabbit's house, Rabbit said it was just the day for them, because Tigger always bounced on ahead of everybody, and as soon as he got out of sight, they would hurry away in the other direction, and he would never see them again.
しかし彼とプーがラビットの家に着いたとき、ラビットは今日はうってつけの日だ、ティガーがみんなの前方で飛び跳ねて、見えなくなった途端、反対方向に急いで離れよう、そうしたら彼は二度とボクらを見つけられない、と言いました。

"Not never?" said Piglet.
「二度と？」ピグレットは言いました。

"Well, not until we find him again, Piglet. Tomorrow, or whenever it is. Come on. He's waiting for us."
「いや、またボクらが彼を見つけるまで、ピグレット。明日かそれとも。行こう。彼が待ってるよ。」

When they got to Kanga's house, they found that Roo was waiting too, being a great friend of Tigger's,
彼らがカンガの家に着いた時、ティガーの大の仲良しのルーも待っていました。

which made it Awkward; but Rabbit whispered “Leave this to me” behind his paw to Pooh,
そのことは心配でしたが、ラビットは手を口にあてて、『ボクにまかせて。』とプーにささやきました。

and went up to Kanga.
そしてカンガのところへ行きました。

"I don't think Roo had better come," he said. "Not today."
「ルーは来ないほうがいいと思う。今日は」彼は言いました。

"Why not?" said Roo, who wasn't supposed to be listening.
「どうして？」ルーは言った。彼は聞くつもりはありませんでした。

"Nasty cold day," said Rabbit, shaking his head. "And you were coughing this morning."
「嫌な寒い日だ。」ラビットは頭を横に振りながら言いました。「それにキミは今朝は咳をしている。」

"How do you know?" asked Roo indignantly.
「どうして分かるの？」ルーは怒って言いました。

"Oh, Roo, you never told me," said Kanga reproachfully.
「まあ、ルー、私に言わなかったのね。」カンガはとがめるように言いました。

"It was a biscuit cough," said Roo, "not one you tell about."
「ビスケットを食べて、むせたんだよ。ママが言ってるのとは違う。」ルーは言いました。

"I think not today, dear. Another day."
「今日は行かないほうがいい。また今度ね、」

"Tomorrow?" said Roo hopefully.
「明日？」ルーは期待して言いました。

"We'll see," said Kanga.
「様子を見て。」カンガは言いました。

"You're always seeing, and nothing ever happens," said Roo sadly.
「いつも様子を見て、結局何もないんだから。」ルーは悲しそうに言いました。

"Nobody could see on a day like this, Roo," said Rabbit. "I don't expect we shall get very far, and then this afternoon we'll all--we'll all-- we'll--ah, Tigger, there you are. Come on. Goodbye, Roo! This afternoon we'll--come on, Pooh! All ready? That's right. Come on."
「こんな日はどうなるか誰にも分からないよ、ルー。」ラビットは言いました。「あまり遠くへは行かないと思う。だから午後にでも一緒にーみんなでーああ、ティガー、来たね、行こう、さよなら、ルー！午後にでも、みんなでー行こう、プー？準備はいいかい？よし、行こう。」
