Ch.7-4　「こっちが家に帰る道だから。」

So they went.
それで彼らは出かけました。

At first Pooh and Rabbit and Piglet walked together,
最初、プーとラビットとピグレットが一緒に歩きました。

and Tigger ran round them in circles,
そしてティガーは彼らの回りを走り廻りました。

and then, when the path got narrower, Rabbit, Piglet and Pooh walked one after another,
それから道が狭くなると、ラビットとピグレットとプーは一列になって歩きました。

and Tigger ran round them in oblongs, and by-and-by, when the gorse got very prickly on each side of the path, Tigger ran up and down in front of them,
そしてティガーは彼らの回りを楕円形回り、やがて道の両側のハリエニシダがチクチクするようになると、彼らの前を行ったり来たりしました。

and sometimes he bounced into Rabbit and sometimes he didn't.
そして時々、彼はラビットにぶつかったり、そうでなかったりしました。

And as they got higher, the mist got thicker,
だんだん高い所に来ると、霧も濃くなってきました。

so that Tigger kept disappearing, and then when you thought he wasn't there,

there he was again, saying “I say, come on,” and before you could say anything, there he wasn't.
それでティガーはまた現れて、『さあ、行こう。』と言って、彼らが何か言う前にいなくなりました。

Rabbit turned round and nudged Piglet.
ラビットは振り向いて、ピグレットに肘で合図しました。

"The next time," he said. "Tell Pooh."
「今度だよ。プーに言って。」彼は言いました。

"The next time," said Piglet to Pooh.
「今度だよ。」ピグレットはプーに言いました。

"The next what?" said Pooh to Piglet.
「今度、何？」プーはピグレットに言いました。

Tigger appeared suddenly, bounced into Rabbit, and disappeared again.
ティガーが突然現れて、ラビットにぶつかって、再び見えなくなりました。

“Now!” said Rabbit.
『今だ！』ラビットは言いました。

He jumped into a hollow by the side of the path,
彼は急いで小道の側のくぼみに飛び込みました。

and Pooh and Piglet jumped after him.
そして、プーとピグレットも後を追いました。

They crouched in the bracken, listening.
彼らはわらびの茂みにうずくまって、聞いていました。

The Forest was very silent when you stopped and listened to it.
森は耳をすましても静かでした。

They could see nothing and hear nothing.
彼らは何も見えず、何も聞こえませんでした。

"H'sh!" said Rabbit.
「シッ！」ラビットは言いました。

"I am," said Pooh.
「静かにしてるよ。」プーは言いましたた。

There was a pattering noise... then silence again.
パタパタいう音がして、再び静かになりました。

"Hallo!" said Tigger, and he sounded so close suddenly that Piglet would have jumped if Pooh hadn't accidentally been sitting on most of him.
「やあ！」ティガーは言いました。そしてとても近くに聞こえたので、ピグレットはもしプーが偶然彼の上に座っていなかったら、飛び上がっていたでしょう。

"Where are you?" called Tigger.
「どこにいるの？」ティガーは叫びました。

Rabbit nudged Pooh,
ラビットはプーをつつきました。

and Pooh looked about for Piglet to nudge, but couldn't find him,
そしてプーはつつこうとピグレットを探したけれど、見つけることができませんでした。

and Piglet went on breathing wet bracken as quietly as he could,
そしてピグレットはできるだけ静かに濡れたわらびの茂みを吸い続けました。

and felt very brave and excited.
そしてとても勇敢にワクワク感を覚えました。

"That's funny," said Tigger.
「おかしいな。」ティガーは言いました。

There was a moment's silence,
一瞬の沈黙がありました。

and then they heard him pattering off again.
それから彼らはティガーが再びパタパタと走り去る音を聞きました。

For a little longer they waited,
もう少し長く彼らは待ちました。

until the Forest had become so still that it almost frightened them,
とうとう森はあまりに静かになってほとんど怖いくらいでした。

and then Rabbit got up and stretched himself.
それからラビットが起き上がって、体を伸ばしました。

"Well?" he whispered proudly. "There we are! Just as I said."
「もういいかな？」彼は誇らしげにささやきました。「ほら！言ったとおりになったぞ。」

"I've been thinking," said Pooh, "and I think "
「ずっと考えてたんだけど。」プーは言いました。「思うに、」

"No," said Rabbit. "Don't. Run. Come on." And they all hurried off, Rabbit leading the way.
「だめだ、」ラビットは言いました。「だめだ。走ろう。さあ。」彼らはみんな走りました。ラビットが先頭にいました。

"Now," said Rabbit, after they had gone a little way, "we can talk. What were you going to say, Pooh?"
「さあ、」ラビットは少し離れた後、言いました。「これで話せるよ。何を言おうとしてたんだい、プー？」

"Nothing much. Why are we going along here?"
「特になにも。ボクらはどうしてこっちに行ってるの？」

"Because it's the way home." 「家に帰る道だから。」

"Oh!" said Pooh. 「おー！」プーは言いました。

"I think it's more to the right," said Piglet nervously. "What do you think, Pooh?"
「もっと右の方かと思うけど。」ピグレットは心配して言いました。「どう思う、プー？」

Pooh looked at his two paws.
プー自分の両手を見ました。

He knew that one of them was the right,
彼はそのどちらかが右だと知っていました。

and he knew that when you had decided which one of them was the right, then the other one was the left,
そしてそのどちらかが右だと決まれば、その反対が左だと知っていました。

but he never could remember how to begin.
しかし彼はその決め方を思い出せませんでした。
