Ch.10-4　彼は世界を見渡して、いつまでも続くことを願いました

"I like that too," said Christopher Robin, "but what I like doing best is Nothing."
「ボクも好きだな。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。「でもボクが一番したいことは、何もしないことだ。」

"How do you do Nothing?" asked Pooh, after he had wondered for a long time.
「どうやって何もしないの？」プーは長い間考えて尋ねました。

"Well, it's when people call out at you just as you're going off to do it 'What are you going to do, Christopher Robin?' and you say 'Oh, nothing,' and then you go and do it."
「そうだね。ちょうど何かをしに出かけようとしているときに誰かが、『これから何をするの、クリストファー・ロビン？』と声をかけて、『いや、何も。』とか言って、それをしに行くみたいな。」

"Oh, I see," said Pooh.
「ああ、分かった。」プーは言いました。

"This is a nothing sort of thing that we're doing now."
「今ボクらがやっているようなことが何もしてないことだよ。」

"Oh, I see," said Pooh again.

「ああ、分かった。」プーは再び言いました。

"It means just going along, listening to all the things you can't hear, and not bothering."
「ただ出かけていって、聞こえないものに耳を傾けたり、じゃましたりしないという意味だね。」

"Oh!" said Pooh. 「おー！プー。」

They walked on,
彼らは歩き続けました。
thinking of This and That,
あれこれ考えながらー

and by-and-by they came to an enchanted place on the very top of the Forest called Galleons Lap,
そしてやがて『くぼ地』と呼ばれる森の頂上の素敵な場所にやって来ました。

which is sixty-something trees in a circle; and Christopher Robin knew that it was enchanted
そこは６０本程の木が丸く固まっていて、クリストファー・ロビンはそこが素敵な場所だと知っていました。

because nobody had ever been able to count whether it was sixty-three or sixty-four, not even when he tied a piece of string round each tree after he had counted it.
なぜならその木が６３本なのか６４本なのか誰も数えることができなかったし、数えた木にヒモを結んでいっても、だめだったからです。

Being enchanted, its floor was not like the floor the Forest, gorse and bracken and heather, but close-set grass, quiet and smooth and green.
素敵だったのは、地面が、ハリエニシダやその他のシダ類、ヘザーの森とは違って、芝が密集して、静かでなめらかな緑だったのです。

It was the only place in the Forest where you could sit down carelessly, without getting up again almost at once and looking for some where else.
そこは森の中で気楽に座れて、他の所のようにすぐに立ち上がって別の場所をさがす必要もない唯一の場所でした。

Sitting there they could see the whole world spread out until it reached the sky,
そこに座って、彼らは世界が空に届くまで広がっているのを見ることができました。

and whatever there was all the world over was with them in Galleons Lap.
この世にあるすべてのものが『くぼ地』で彼らと一緒にいました。

Suddenly Christopher Robin began to tell Pooh about some of the things:
突然、クリストファー・ロビンはあることをプーに話し始めました。

People called Kings and Queens and something called Factors, and a place called Europe, and an island in the middle of the sea where no ships came, and how you make a Suction Pump (if you want to), and when Knights were Knighted, and what comes from Brazil.
『王様』とか『女王様』とか呼ばれる人たち,『係りの者』と呼ばれる人たち、『ヨーロッパ』と呼ばれる場所、船が来れない海の真ん中にある島、『吸い上げポンプ』の作り方（作りたい場合）、騎士が騎士たるとき、何がブラジルから来るか、などです。

And Pooh, his back against one of the sixty-something trees and his paws folded in front of him, said “Oh!” and “I didn't know,” and thought how wonderful it would be to have a Real Brain which could tell you things.
そして、プーは６０何本の木の一つにもたれて、腕を前で組んで『おー！』とか『知らなかった。』とか言って、人にものを教えれる本物の脳があったらどんなにいいだろうと考えていました。

And by-and-by Christopher Robin came to an end of the things, and was silent, and he sat there looking out over the world, and wishing it wouldn't stop.
そしてやがてクリストファー・ロビンの話が終わって、静かになると、彼は世界を見渡して、終わらないことを願いました。

But Pooh was thinking too, and he said suddenly to Christopher Robin:
しかし、プーも考えていて、突然、クリストファー・ロビンに言いました。

"Is it a very Grand thing to be an Afternoon, what you said?"
「キミが言った『午後』であるのはとても素晴らしい事だね？」

"A what?" said Christopher Robin lazily, as he listened to something else.
「何だって？」クリストファー・ロビンは、他のことに耳を傾けていたので、よく分かりませんでした。

"On a horse," explained Pooh.
「馬に乗った、」プーは説明しました。

"A Knight?"
「騎士のこと？」

"Oh, was that it?" said Pooh. "I thought it was a-- Is it as Grand as a King and Factors and all the other things you said?"
「あっ、それだった？」プーは言いました。「ボクが思ってたのはーそれってキミが言ってた王や係りの者やその他のものと同じくらいすごいの？」

"Well, it's not as grand as a King," said Christopher Robin, and then, as Pooh seemed disappointed, he added quickly, "but it's grander than Factors."
「王様ほどすごくはない。」クリストファー・ロビンは言って、プーががっかりしたように見えてので、すぐに付け加えました。「でも係りの者よりすごいよ。」

"Could a Bear be one?"
「クマでもなれる？」

"Of course he could!" said Christopher Robin. "I'll make you one." And he took a stick and touched Pooh on the shoulder, and said, "Rise, Sir Pooh de Bear, most faithful of all my Knights."
「もちろんなれるさ。」クリストファー・ロビンは言いました。「ボクがキミを騎士にしてあげるよ。」そして彼は棒切れを持ってプーの肩に触れて言いました。「起きよ、クマのプー卿、我が騎士の中で最も忠誠なるものよ。」
