前置詞のあとは必ず「名詞」
「前置詞」＋「名詞」のかたまりは、「句」と呼ばれ、形容詞か副詞としての働きがあります。
そのかたまりが、名詞にかかれば「形容詞句」、動詞にかかれば「副詞句」となります。
on the desk という「前置詞」＋「名詞」のかたまりは、
the book on the desk の場合、
on the desk は the book という「名詞」にかかる「形容詞句」となり、
「机の上の本」と訳せます。
The book is on the desk. の場合は、
on the desk は is（あります）という「動詞」にかかる「副詞句」となり、
「その本は机の上にあります。」と訳せます。
「前置詞＋名詞」が動詞にかかる例文をみてみよう
He lives in this town.
彼はこの町に住んでいます。
We went to the concert.
私達はそのコンサートに行きました。
Please come before seven.
７時までには来てください。
She played tennis with Mike.
彼女はマイクとテニスをしました。
The station is not far from here.
駅はここから遠くありません。
We walked from the station to the beach.
私達は駅から浜まで歩いて行きました。
