too ～ to の構文

『あまりにも～なので～できない』の意味がある。

This problem is too difficult for me to solve.
この問題はあまりにも難しいので私には解けない。

too ～ to の構文は so ～ that の構文に書き換えることができる。
This problem is so difficult that I can't solve it.

注）so ～ that の構文は複文（２つ以上の文からなる）ので、solve の目的語 it が必要。

This land is too poor for crops to grow well.
この土地はあまりにやせているので作物がうまく育たない。

(This land is very poor, so crops don't grow well.)
２つ以上の文を and,but, or, so, for で結んだ文を重文という。

too ～ to の構文は『～するにはあまりに～すぎる』という意味で、『あまりにも～なので～できない』と否定の意味をもっているが、

『～するのに十分～だ』、『とても～なので～だ』と肯定を表す場合は、enough to の構文を用いる。

The ice is thick enough to walk on.
氷はとても厚いのでその上を歩くことができる。

注） walk on the ice の表現から the ice が文頭に行ったということで、 on は残る。
