Ch.8-3　「出発！」クリストファー・ロビンが叫びました

In a little while they were all ready at the top of the Forest,
しばらくすると、彼らは森の頂上に準備が整って集合していました。

and the Expotition started.
そして、「トンケン」が始まりました。

First came Christopher Robin and Rabbit, then Piglet and Pooh; ther Kanga, with Roo in her pocket, and Owl; then Eeyore; and, at the end, in a long line, all Rabbit's friends-and-relations.
先頭はクリストファー・ロビンとラビット、それからピグレットとプー、その後に、ポケットにルーを入れたカンガ、それから、イーヨー、最後に、長い列をなして、ラビットの友達やら親戚が続きました。

"I didn't ask them," explained Rabbit carelessly. "They just came. They always do. They can march at the end, after Eeyore."
「ボクは彼らを誘った訳ではない。ただ付いてきただけ。いつもそうなんだ。彼らはイーヨーの後の一番後ろを歩くから。」ラビットはのんきに説明しました。

"What I say," said Eeyore, "is that it's unsettling. I didn't want to come on this Expoーwhat Pooh said. I only came to oblige. But here I am; and if I am the end of the Expoーwhat we're talking aboutーthen let me be the end. But if, every time I want to sit down for a little rest, I have to brush away half a dozen of Rabbit's smaller friends-and-relations first, then this isn't an Expoーwhatever it isーat all, it's simply a Confused Noise. That's what I say."
「ボクが言いたいのは、」イーヨーが言った。「つまり落ち着かないんだ。ボクはこのプーが言った「タン何とか」には来たくなかった。みんなを喜ばせようと思って来ただけなんだ。でも実際に来たんだから、もしボクがみんながそう言ってる「タン何とか」の最後なら、ちゃんと最後尾にしてよ。でも、ちょっと座って休みを取りたいと思う度にまずラビットの小さな友達やら親戚の５，６人を払い退けなければならない。そうなると、これは「タンー」、何でもいいんだけど、それじゃないよね。もうそれは単なるごちゃごちゃの騒音だよ。これがボクが言いたいことさ。」

"I see what Eeyore means," said Owl. "If you ask me ー"
「君の言うことは分かるよ。もしボクに頼むんだったら ー」アウルが言いました。

I'm not asking anybody," said Eeyore. "I'm just telling everybody. We can look for the North Pole, or we can play 'Here we go gathering Nuts and May' with the end part of an ant's nest. It's all the same to me."
「誰にも頼んでないよ。みんなに言ってるんだ。北極を探すのもいいし、「かごめかごめ」で遊ぶのもいいし、ボクにとっては同じことさ。」イーヨーは言いました。

There was a shout from the top of the line.
列の先頭から叫び声が聞こえた。

"Come on!" called Christofer Robin.
「出発！」クリストファー・ロビンが叫びました。

"Come on!" called Pooh and Piglet.
「出発！」プーとピグレットが叫びました。

"Come on!" called Owl.
「出発！」アウルが叫びました。

“We're starting,” said Rabbit.
「いよいよ出発だ。」ラビットは言いました。

“I must go.” And he hurried off to the front of the Expotition with Christopher Robin.
「ボクは行くよ。」そして、彼はクリストファー・ロビンと「トンケン」の先頭まで走りました。

“All right,” said Eeyore. “We're going. Only Don't Blame Me.”
「分かったよ。出かけよう。でもボクが悪いんじゃないからね。」イーヨーは言いました。

So off they all went to discover the Pole.
それで、彼らはみんな、北極を探しに出かけました。

And as they walked, they chattered to each other of this and that, all except Pooh, who was making up a song.
歩きながら、彼らはあれやこれやお互いにおしゃべりをしていましたが、プーだけは歌を作っていました。

"This is the first verse." he said to Piglet, when he was ready with it.
「これが最初の行だよ。」彼は詩の準備ができると、ピグレットに言いました。

"First verse of what?"
「何の１行？」

"My song."
「ボクの歌さ。」

"What song?"
「どんな歌？」

"This one."
「これさ。」

"Which one?"
「どれ？」

"Well, if you listen, Piglet, you'll hear it."
「いいかい、もし聞くんだったら、ピグレット、聞くよね。」

"How do you know I'm not listening?"
「聞かないって、どうして分かるの？」

Pooh couldn't answer that one, so he began to sing.
プーはこれには答えず、歌い始めました。

They all went off to discover the Pole,
北極探しにみんなで出かけた

Owl and Piglet and Rabbit and all;
アウル、ピグレット、ラビット、みんな

It's a Thing you Discover, as I've been tole
それは君が見つけるものと、前にボクは聞かされた

By Owl and Piglet and Rabbit and all.
アウル、ピグレット、ラビット、みんなから

Eeyore, Christfer Robin and Pooh
イーヨー、クリストファー・ロビン、プー

And Rabbit's relations all went too ー
それにラビットの親戚、みんなも、出かけた

And where the Pole was none of them knew....
そして北極がどこにあるのか、誰にも分からなかった・・・

Sing Hey! for Owl and Rabbit and all!
さあ歌おう！アウルやラビット、みんなのために！

"Hush!" said Christfer Robin turning round to Pooh, "we're just coming to a Dangerous Place."
「シッ！」クリストファー・ロビンはプーの方を向いて、言った。「危険な場所に来たぞ。」

"Hush!" said Pooh turning round quickly to Piglet.
「シッ！」ピグレットの方を向いて素早くプーは言いました。

"Hush!" said Piglet to Kanga.
「シッ！」ピグレットはカンガに言いました。

"Hush!" said Kanga to Owl, while Roo said "Hush" several times to himself very quickly.
「シッ！」カンガはアウルに言いました。一方、ルーも「シッ！」と早口で数回ひとり言を言いました。

"Hush!" said Owl to Eeyore.
「シッ！」アウルはイーヨーに言いました。

"Hush!" said Eeyore in a terrible voice to all Rabbit's friends-and-relations, and "Hush!" they said hastily to each other all down the line, until it got to the last one of all.
「シッ！」イーヨーは恐ろしい声でラビットの「友達やら親戚」に言った。すると彼らはお互いにあわてて「シッ！」と言って列の最後まで続きました。

And the last and smallest friend-and-relation was so upset to find that the whole Expotition was saying “Hush!” to him, that he buried himself head downwards in a crack in the ground, and stayed there for two days until the danger was over,
そして最後の一番小さな「友達やら親戚」は「トンケン」全体が自分に「シッ！」と言っているのが分かり、とても驚いて地面の穴に頭を隠し、危険が去るまで２日間そこにいました。

and then went home in a great hurry, and lived quietly with his Aunt ever-afterwards. His name was Alexander Beetle.
そして大急ぎで家に帰り、それ以後「おばさん」と静かに暮らしました。彼の名前はアレキサンダー・ビートルでした。
