Ch.6-5　誕生日おめでとう、プーより愛をこめて

Well, he washed the pot out, and dried it,
さて、彼はツボを洗って、乾かしました。

while Owl licked the end of his pencil, and wondered how to spell "birthday."
一方、アウルは鉛筆の先を舐めて、「誕生日」のつづりを考えていました。

"Can you read, Pooh?" he asked, a little anxiously. "There's a notice about knocking and ringing outside my door, which Christofer Robin wrote. Could you read it?"
「プー、読める？」彼は少し心配になって尋ねた。「ドアの外にノックとベルの注意書きがあるだろ？あれはクリストファー・ロビンが書いたんだ。読めた？」

"Christofer Robin told me what it said, and then I could."
「クリストファー・ロビンが何て書いてあるか教えてくれたんで読めるよ。」

"Well, I'll tell you what this says, and then you'll be able to."
「じゃあ、これが何て書いてあるか教えるから、読めるよね。」

So Owl wrote . . . and this is what he wrote:
そして、アウルは書きました・・・彼が書いたのはこれです。

HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA BTHUTHDY.

Pooh looked on admiringly.
プーはすごいと思いながら、見ました。

"I'm just saying 'A Happy Birthday,'" said Owl carelessly.
「’誕生日おめでとう’って書いてるんだ。」アウルはさりげなく言いました。

"It's a nice long one," said Pooh, very much impressed by it.
「素敵な長いものだね。」プーはそれにとても感動して言いました。

"Well, actually, of course, I'm saying 'A Very Happy Birthday with love from Pooh.' Naturally it takes a good deal of pencil to say a long thing like that."
「えーっと、実際は、『誕生日おめでとう、ぷーより愛をこめて』と書いてるんだ。当然こんなに長い文だと鉛筆もたくさん使うよ。」

"Oh, I see," said Pooh.
「わかるよ。」プーは言いました。

While all this was happening, Piglet had gone back to his own house to get Eeyore's balloon.
こうこうしているうちに、ピグレットはイーヨーにあげる風船を取りに自分の家に戻りました。

He held it very tightly against himself, so that it shouldn't blow away, and he ran as fast as he could so as to get to Eeyore before Pooh did;
彼は風船が飛んで行かないように、しっかりと握り、プーよりも早くイーヨーのところに行こうと出来る限り速く走りました。

for he thought that he would like to be the first one to give a present, just as if he had thought of it without being told by anybody.
というのは、人から言われたからではなく、自分で思い付いたように、プレゼントを最初に渡したかったからでした。

And running along, and thinking how pleased Eeyore would be, he didn't look where he was going...
走っている途中、イーヨーがどんなに喜ぶだろうかと考えていたので、前を見ていませんでした。

and suddenly he put his foot in a rabbit hole, and fell down flat on his face.
そして突然、足がラビットの穴に引っかかり、顔から転んでしまいました。
