So off Piglet trotted; and in the other direction went Pooh, with his jar of honey.
それで、ピグレットは小走りで帰り、プーはツボをかかえて、反対方向へ行きました。
It was a warm day, and he had a long way to go.
暖かい日で、長い道のりでした。
He hadn't gone more than half-way when a sort of funny feeling began to creep all over him.
まだ半分も行かないうちに、何かおかしな感じが彼の中に忍び込んできました。
It began at the tip of his nose and trickled all through him and out at the soles of his feet.
それは彼の鼻の先から始まり、身体中に流れ、足の裏から出ていきました。
It was just as if somebody inside him were saying, “Now then, Pooh, time for a little something.”
まるで誰かが「さあ、プー、おやつの時間よ。」と言っているようでした。
"Dear, dear," said Pooh, "I didn't know it was as late as that."
「やれやれ、もうこんな時間だとは知らなかった。」プーは言いました。
So he sat down and took the top off his jar of honey.
それで彼は座り込んで、ハチミツのツボのふたを開けました。
"Lucky I brought this with me," he thought.
「これを持ってきていてよかった。」彼は思いました。
"Many a bear going out on a warm day like this would never have thought of bringing a little something with him."
「こんな暖かい日に出かけるくまの多くはちょっとしたおやつを持って出かけるなんて思ったこともないだろうな。」
And he began to eat.
そして彼は食べ始めました。

"Now let me see," he thought, as he took his last lick of the inside of the jar, "where was I going? Ah, yes, Eeyore."
「さてと。」彼はツボの中身の最後の一なめをして、思いました。「どこに行こうとしてたんだっけ？そうだ、イーヨーだ。」
He got up slowly.
彼はゆっくりと立ち上がりました。
And then, suddenly, he remembered.
それから突然、思い出しました。
He had eaten Eeyore's birthday present!
彼はイーヨーのプレゼントを食べてしまったのです。
"Bother!" said Pooh. "What shall I do? I must give him something."
「チェッ！どうしよう、彼に何かあげなくちゃ。」プーは言いました。
For a little while he couldn't think of anything. Then he thought:
しばらく何も思いつきませんでしたが、その時思いつきました。
"Well, it's a very nice pot, even if there's no honey in it, and if I washed it clean, and got somebody to write 'A Happy Birthday' on it, Eeyore could keep things in it, which might be Useful."
「まあハチミツは入ってなくても、すてきなツボだから、きれいに洗って、誰かに『誕生日おめでとう』と書いてもらえば、イーヨーも中に物をいれることができて、役に立つかもしれない。」
So, as he was just passing the Hundred Acre Wood, he went inside to call on Owl, who lived there.
それで、彼は１００エーカーの森を通っていたとき、そこに住んでいたアウルの家に行きました。

"Many happy returns of Eeyore's birthday," said Pooh.
「今日はイーヨーの誕生日なんだ。」プーは言いました。
"Oh, is that what it is?"
「そうなの？」
"What are you giving him, Owl?"
「君は何をあげるつもり、アウル？」
"What are you giving him, Pooh?"
「君こそ何をあげるつもりだ、プー？」
"I'm giving him a Useful Pot to Keep Things In, and I wanted to ask you ー"
「ボクは何でも入れることができる役に立つツボをやるつもりだよ。だから君にー」
"Is that it?" said Owl, taking it out of Pooh's paw.
プーの手からツボを取って、「それがそうなの？」と、アウルは言いました。

"Yes, and I wanted to ask you ー"

"You can keep anything in it," said Pooh earnestly. "It's Very Useful like that. And I wanted to ask you ー"
「何を入れてもいいんだよ。とても役に立つつぼなんだ。だから君にー」プーは熱心に言いました。
"You ought to write 'A Happy Birthday' on it."
「つぼの上に『誕生日おめでとう』と書くべきだよ。」
"That was what I wanted to ask you," said Pooh. "Because my spelling is Wobbly. It's good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places. Would you write 'A Happy Birthday' on it for me?"
「君に頼みたかったのはそれだよ。」プーは言いました。「ボクのスペルはゆがむんだ。スペルはいいんだけど、ゆがむんだよ。それに、文字の順番が間違ってたりする。だからボクに代わって、『誕生日おめでとう。』って書いてくれない？」

"It's a nice pot," said Owl, looking at it all round. "Couldn't I give it too? From both of us?"
「すてきなツボだね。」アウルはツボをぐるっと見て言いました。「ボクもあげられないかな？ボクたち二人から？」
"No," said Pooh. "That would not be a good plan. Now I'll just wash it first, and then you can write on it."
「だめだよ。」プーは言いました。「それはいい考えだとは思わない。さて、まずこれを洗おう、そうしたらキミはツボに書けるよ。」
