Ch.5-2　罠を仕掛けるんだ

Pooh nodded his head several times as he said this, and waited for Piglet to say
こう言うと、プーは数回頷いて、ピグレットがこう言ってくれるのを待ちました。

"How?" or "Pooh, you couldn't!"
「どうやって？」あるいは、「プー、できっこない！」

or something helpful of that sort,
あるいは、そのような何か救いになるようなことを・・・

but Piglet said nothing.
でも、ピグレットは何も言いませんでした。

The fact was Piglet was wishing that he had thought about it first.
実は、ピグレットもそのことを最初に思い付いていたらなあと考えていたのです。

"I shall do it," said Pooh, after waiting a little longer, "by means of a trap. And it must be a Cunning Trap, so you will have to help me, Piglet."
「絶対やるよ。」プーは少し長く待って言いました。「罠を仕掛けるんだ。それは巧妙な罠でなければならない。だから、ピグレット、君も手伝うんだよ。」と、言いました。

"Pooh," said Piglet, feeling quite happy again now, "I will." And then he said, "How shall we do it?",
「プー。」再びとてもうれしくなって、ピグレットは言いました。「ボクもやるよ。どんなふうにしようか。」

and Pooh said, "That's just it. How?" And then they sat down together to think it out.
そしてプーは言いました。「まさしくそれだ。どうやって。」それから彼らは一緒に座って考えました。

Pooh's first idea was that they should dig a Very Deep Pit, and then the Heffalump would come along and fall into the Pit, and ー
プーの最初の考えは、とても深い穴を掘って、ヘファランプがやって来て、穴に落ちる、そしてー

"Why?" said Piglet.
「なぜ？」ピグレットが言いました。

"Why what?" said Pooh.
「何がなぜ？」プーが言いました。

"Why would he fall in?"
「なぜ彼は落ちるの？」

Pooh rubbed his nose with his paw, and said that the Heffalump might be walking along, humming a little song, and looking up at the sky, wondering if it would rain, and so he wouldn't see the Very Deep Pit until he was half-way down, when it would be too late.
プーは手で鼻をこすり、ヘファランプがハミングしながら歩いていて、雨かなと思って、空を見上げて、とても深い穴が見えてなくて、気付いた時は半分ほど落ちて、そうなればもう手遅れさ、と言いました。

Piglet said that this was a very good Trap, but supposing it were raining already?
ピグレットは、それはいい罠だけど、雨が降っていたらどうするの、と言いました。

Pooh rubbed his nose again, and said that he hadn't thought of that.
プーは再び鼻をこすり、そのことは考えていなかったと言いました。

And then he brightened up, and said that, if it were raining already, the Heffalump would be looking at the sky wondering if it would clear up,
それから気を取り直して、もし雨が降っていたら、ヘファランプは空を見上げて、晴れるかなと思うだろう。

and so he wouldn't see the Very Deep Pit until he was half-way down.... When it would be too late.
それでとても深い穴が見えてなくて、気付いた時は半分ほど落ちて、そうなればもう手遅れさ、と言いました。

Piglet said that, now that this point had been explained, he thought it was a Cunning Trap.
この点は説明がついたので、それは巧妙な罠だと思う、とピグレットは言いました。

Pooh was very proud when he heard this,
プーはこれを聞いて、とても誇りに思いました。

and he felt that the Heffalump was as good as caught already,
そしてヘファランプは捕まえたも同然という気になりました。

but there was just one other thing which had to be thought about, and it was this.
しかし、もう１つ考えておかなければならないことがありました。それはこうです。

Where should they dig the Very Deep Pit?
どこにとても深い穴を掘るべきか？

Piglet said that the best place would be somewhere where a Heffalump was, just before he fell into it, only about a foot farther on.
ピグレットは一番いいのはヘファランプがいるところだ、落ちるすぐ前、１フィート離れたところ、と言いました。

"But then he would see us digging it," said Pooh.
「でもそれではボクらが穴を掘っている所を彼が見るよ。」プーは言いました。

"Not if he was looking at the sky."
「彼が空を見ていたら見ないさ。」

"He would Suspect," said Pooh, "if he happened to look down."
「疑うよ、たまたま下を見た時に。」と、プーは言いました。

He thought for a long time and then added sadly,
彼は長いこと考えて、悲しそうに付け加えました。

"It isn't as easy as I thought. I suppose that's why Heffalumps hardly ever get caught."
「思ったほど簡単じゃない。それがフェファランプがなかなか捕まらない理由だね。」

"That must be it," said Piglet.
「そうにちがいない。」ピグレットは言いました。
