POOH was sitting in his house one day, counting his pots of honey, when there came a knock on the door.
ある日、プーは家の中で座って、ハチミツの壺を数えていると、ドアをノックする音が聞こえました。
"Fourteen," said Pooh. "Come in. Fourteen. Or was it fifteen? Bother. That's muddled me."
「１４，どうぞ入って、１４、あれっ１５だったっけ？チェッ！こんがらがってきた。」

"Hallo, Pooh," said Rabbit.
「やあ、プー。」ラビットは言いました。
"Hallo, Rabbit. Fourteen, wasn't it?"
「やあ、ラビット。１４だったっけ？」
"What was?"
「何が？」
"My pots of honey what I was counting."
「ハチミツの壺だよ。数えていたんだ。」
"Fourteen, that's right."
「１４，間違いない。」
"Are you sure?"
「ホント？」
"No," said Rabbit. "Does it matter?"
「いや、大事なの？」ラビットは言いました。
"I just like to know," said Pooh humbly, "So as I can say to myself: 'I've got fourteen pots of honey left.' Or fifteen, as the case may be. It's sort of comforting."
「知っときたいんだよ。」プーはつまらなさそうに言いました。「ハチミツの壺は１４残ってるって言えるように、１５だったかな、場合によると。少しばかり慰めになるんだ。」
注）Does it matter? ：大事なの？（matter は「重要である、問題である」 注）humbly : つまらなさそうに、控えめに

"Well, let's call it sixteen," said Rabbit. "What I came to say was: Have you seen Small anywhere about?"
「そうかい、じゃあ１６にしとこう。」ラビットは言いました。「ボクが言いに来たのはね、どこかでスモール見なかったかい？」

"I don't think so," said Pooh. And then, after thinking a little more, he said: "Who is Small?"
「見なかったと思うよ。」プーは言いました。そして、もう少し考えた後、「スモールって誰？」と言いました。
"One of my friends-and-relations," said Rabbit carelessly.
「ボクの友達・親戚のひとりだよ。」ラビットはのんきに言いました。

This didn't help Pooh much,
このことはプーにとって、あまり役に立ちませんでした。
because Rabbit had so many friends-and-relations, and of such different sorts and sizes, that he didn't know whether he ought to be looking for Small at the top of an oaktree or in the petal of a buttercup.
なぜなら、ラビットにはあまりにも多くの友達・親戚がいて、種類も大きさもまちまちだったので、オークの木の頂上で探したらいいのかキンポウゲの花びらの中を探したらいいのか分からなかったのです。
"I haven't seen anybody today," said Pooh, "not so as to say 'Hallo, Small!' to. Did you want him for anything?"
「今日は誰とも会っていない。『やあ、スモール』と言ったこともない。彼に何か用事があったの？」プーは言いました。
"I don't want him," said Rabbit. "But it's always useful to know where a friend-and-relation is, whether you want him or whether you don't."
「彼に用事はないんだけど、友達・親戚がどこにいるか知っておくと役に立つんだ。用事があろうと、なかろうと。」ラビットは言いました。
"Oh, I see," said Pooh. "Is he lost?"
「分かった。行方が分からないの？」プーは言いました。
"Well," said Rabbit, "nobody has seen him for a long time, so I suppose he is.Anyhow," he went on importantly, "I promised Christopher Robin I'd Organize a Search for him, so come on."
「そうなんだ。」ラビットは言いました。「誰も長いこと彼を見ていない。だから、彼は行方不明なんだと思う。」彼はもったいぶって続けました。「とにかく彼の捜索隊を編成するってクリストファー・ロビンに約束したんだ。だからおいでよ。」

Pooh said good-bye affectionately to his fourteen pots of honey, and hoped they were fifteen;
プーは１４ハチミツの壺に愛しそうにさよならを言って、１５だったらいいなと思いました。
and he and Rabbit went out into the Forest.
そしてラビットと二人で森に入って行きました。
"Now," said Rabbit, "this is a Search, and I've Organized it----"
「さて、これは捜索で、ボクが組織したんだ・・・」ラビットは言いました。
"Done what to it?" said Pooh.
「何をしたって？」プーは言いました。
"Organized it. Which means--well, it's what you do to a Search, when you don't all look in the same place at once. So I want you, Pooh, to search by the Six Pine Trees first, and then work your way towards Owl's House, and look out for me there. Do you see?"
「組織だよ。つまりー捜索するときにすることだよ。１度に大勢で同じ場所を探す必要はないからね。そこで君が必要なんだ。最初に６本の松の木あたりを探してくれ、それから探しながら徐々にアウルの家のほうに進んで、そこでボクを見つけてくれ。分かった？」

"No," said Pooh. "What "
「いや、何て。」
"Then I'll see you at Owl's House in about an hour's time."
「じゃあ、１時間後にアウルの家で会おう。」
"Is Piglet organdized too?"
「ピグレットもソシギに入ってるの？」
"We all are," said Rabbit, and off he went.
「みんな入ってるよ。」ラビットは言って、去って行きました。
